    Baseball BREAKING NEWS - Bonds

As I have posted in the Talkin Baseball thread -

    BREAKING NEWS:

Barry Bonds homered in the second inning tonight in San Diego, giving him 755 career home runs, tying Hank Aaron's all time record.

He hit it the opposite way, to left center field, off of Padre starter Clay Hensley.

He was greeted by his teammates at home plate, and got cheers mixed with boos from the Padres crowd at Petco Park.

Earlier today, another milestone was reached as the Yankees Alex Rodriguez hit career homer number 500.

    Excellent news! Finally!

I look forward to the sports news tonight. No doubt it'll be the top story.

Congrats to A-Rod as well. He's still got a few more years of the game left in him, too, doesn't he?

Shame on those Padres fans, though, for booing. Very poor sportsmanship, but then again, sportsmanship is an old idea from another era, and it isn't taught because nobody's making any money off it.

It was more cheers than boos, really. When he went back out for the top of the 3rd the fans in LF applauded him.

It was a better reaction than I thought he'd get, quite honestly, and there were plenty of cheers.

It was a better reaction than he would have gotten at Dodger Stadium.

Umm, he did admit to taking steroids, although "he didn't know". And how is it humanly possible that your head grows 2 hat sizes when you're 35.

Doesn't matter though. A-Rod is going to smash his record.

steroids aside, i'm still bummed about him getting the record. barry bonds is a bad man, plain and simple. he is arrogant, rude, and egotistical. i've followed sports (especially bay area sports) for all of my life and i have never heard one positive thing about this guy.

he refuses to ride the team bus and drives himself. he has his own section in the locker room. none of his teammates like him. this goes back to his college days at arizona state. his college coach held a vote to see who wanted bonds on the team and who wanted him off. 22 said they wanted him gone, 2 said they wanted him there.

the proof is in the pudding, this is not a good person. it's sad that when kids think of the best, most coveted record in sports that they will have to think of barry.

yeah, that's what every 40 something guy looks like....

especially when they looked like this in their 20's....

Doesn't matter. Bond's record will always have an asterisk by it, at least in my mind. "On juice most of his career". Others will best the mark, hopefully those that we can look up to more so than Barry.

Great to see all the reactions here. A reminder that you are all aways welcome in the Talkin Baseball thread.

PS...regardless of personal opinions...and I don't like Bonds either...but even if it is proven that he used steroids he still played within the rules governing baseball at the time...and he is still probably the best overall player of his generation.

He was walked in his second at-bat tonight.

Re: Baseball BREAKING NEWS - Bonds

I remember sitting riveted to the TV the night Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record. I so don't care that Bonds caught him. Bonds represents everything that is wrong about baseball and his HR record will always be tainted.

How ironic that Bonds does this a matter of days after high class guys Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn are inducted in the HOF. The ridiculous and the sublime indeed.

    Love the discourse!

Barry - although he does technically play within the rules that govern baseball at the time, he uses substances that players in earlier generations did not. Those substances enhance his physical capabilities, thus giving him an advantage that must be weighed against the likes of Aaron and Ruth. For that reason, I will never consider him or his record to be legitimate. It will always have an asterisk in my mind.
