    Batmobile spotted!

Sometimes living in proximity to Hollywood has its advantages. You never know what or who is going to pop up next... like the time we spotted Dustin Hoffman on a sidewalk in Brentwood or met Sting and his family while hiking in a remote part of Topanga Canyon.

Well, yesterday, another little bluebird of happiness appeared. While driving through "the valley" we spotted the Batmobile going the other way! This was the original Batmobile from the TV show with Adam West. The light had just turned green and as we crossed Winnetka and Victory, there it was... sitting in traffic! WOW! I couldn't believe my eyes. It is in beautiful condition. It looked like it had just received a total restoration. The guy driving it had a grin a mile wide. I'll bet! I wonder where he was going.

That's something you don't see everyday.
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

    Cool.

We see it almost every year on display at the Los Angeles County Fair.

The one you saw was probably one of the 3 replicas that original Batmobile designer George Barris produced for the show circuit and which are now in private collections. The original TV/Adam West one is still owned by George and is on permanent display at the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Hot Wheels has a new die cast 2007 release of the 1966 version of it. Kind of hard to find, but they're out there - just 99 cents!

I saw one of the 3 replicas this past May at the car museum in Reno. Here's a pic I took of it:

It has been a while since I thought about the Batmobile and I had forgotten that replicas had been made. Of course, it's one of those that we saw. Nevertheless... it does make quite an impression tooling down the boulevard!

That was and is still the best of the Batmobiles.

The history of the making of that car is great reading.

I'd have too much fun going to all the drive-thru's and curbside carryout places.

    "Which car is yours?"

    "The Bat Mobile."

Fun with valet parking! (although you may never see it again!)

    Re: Batmobile spotted!

What you saw is one of the MANY replicas, people have built over the years. If you goolge batmoblie repica you'll see MANY of them and the different manufactures. NOBODY in their right mind would ever be driving around town in the truly original Batmoblie. The car is worth a lot of money. The REAL batmoblies created for the show are towed around on flatbed trucks.

In fact, the first and original batmoblie made by george barris is still in his kustom kar shop on display. he doesn't allow it to be driven around town!
