Melonballer returns to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

Some of you may recall that I posted a thread in late June about my visit to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, WA. If not here is a link http://micechat.com/forums/micechat-main-lounge/69415-pictures-point-defiance-zoo-aquarium.html .

Anyways, I went back yesterday with my parents, my sisters, and my younger sister's boyfriend. It was pretty crowded, but not unpleasant. Anyways here are some new pictures.

We picked up my sister and her boyfriend in Seattle, visited IKEA in Tukwila and then headed to Point Defiance. We started by having lunch in the park on the 5-mile drive section. Here is a pic of the Narrows Bridges from the park.

We had a picnic lunch with smoked salmon, cheese, fresh fruit, my mom's cresent rolls, fig/pear butter, some sliced flatiron steak, and some of my chocolate chip cookies. Like all good trip report threads, here is a pic of the spread.

After lunch it was into the zoo.

Here is Jaia the sumatran tiger sitting far off.

LAst time I was there the male was being unfriendly, but today he was front and center.

The asian small-clawed otters were cuddling.

Re: Melonballer returns to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

We caught the wild Wonders show again becasue I knew there would be some different animals than when I was there last time. I was right. Here is an Abyssian Ground Hornbill.

And an Eurasian Eagle Owl.

A decent shot of a Beluga Whale. I believe this is Beethoven.

The Polar Bear.

Now for the highlight of the trip. In all the years I had been going to the zoo the Arctic Fox was always sleeping or hiding when Iwas there. Yesterday he was up and about.

The Reindeer.

Red Wolves.

I checked out the carousel again.

And that is it. I will post some of my Mother's pictures later.

Thanks alot for closing the accidental thread. That is definitely my Mom's idea of a picnic, and I can't argue with a spread like that.

Pretty!

Nerd question because I noticed the bird:
Abby (I can't spell that word if my life depended on it... so abby for short) guinea pigs are spikey guinea pigs. Abby cats are long and skinny. Abby ground hornbill is a pretty bird. Doesn't the abby before the critter's name refer to the apperance or does it refer to...? I am just noticing this because my guinea pig Gus was considered a gorgeous abby because of his spikey swirls and I always thought.... (babbling without caffiene.)

The wolves though... pretty!

Love the TR MB! Thanks. And you're right about the fox. I've never seen that thing up and around. Always thought it was drugged.

For the folks watching the thread from home. Anthony did a great job of capturing the animals, but that park is very nice. Next time, I hope you can get some 'atmosphere' shots so people can see what a little gem we have up here in the NW. Looks like you all had a wonderful time. Thanks for posting MB!

And for my MiceChatting brethren in Portland, we should post some shots of the Washington Park zoo and the rose gardens when they are in bloom!

Re: Melonballer returns to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

Ok, extra points for whoever can name the Arctic Fox...

Anyone?

Rascal. Isn't that a cute name for a cute animal? I love it. I can't recall what his partner's name was but I know the last time I was able to talk to a keeper in the area I learned they are looking at finding him a mate again. Now if guests can stop throwing things into the water around their hill, it would be nice!

For the belugas - miss smartypants said that she thinks it is Qannik (kah-nick) in your picture because the snout is smaller. Oh, and the name of the Hornbill is Stella. She's so nice to share. (sarcasm intended there...did ya catch it?)

But since you are posting pictures from the zoo, I wanted to jump in and share mine from about 10 days ago. We went to see a gallery exhibit that Friday. The zoo camps that week were for kids who were 4-6 grade graduates, and there was an art class and a photography class. Cait was interested and wanted to see what kind of things they did, so we went for that. There was a nice 4 hour break in between the two so of course we had time for the zoo!

On your left is Kannik and the right is Beethoven. Kannik (means "snowflake" - isn't that adorable?) is significantly smaller than Beethoven, but when they aren't together they both just look huge and beautiful to me!!

Miss Smarty Pants didn't know which one of the Polar Bears this was (or the one in MB's pictures either) so she did her usual "I think that's Blizzard" - since he's her favorite it's always him! Based on size though, I'd have to guess it was Blizzard or Glacier since they are bigger and fuller looking than Boris and Kenneth are (the bears that were rescued from a circus).

Miss Smarty Pants found something not listed in the zoo guide. The ladybug would NOT get off of her - it was actually pretty funny.

And the weedy sea dragons -- my favorite sea horsey type things.

I did not use a flash here - it would kill him. Seriously. I took a picture and then did the auto correct thing and ta-da - it looks pretty good!

So, there ya have it! Thanks Melonballer for helping us visit the zoo again! Your pictures are great!!

Thanks for the pictures and information.

However, it has to be Beethoven since he was the one that was there when I was last there. The one I saw last time had grey marks (scars?) on it back and this one had them as well. You can just barely see them in the picture. The other Qannik does not have the marks. However, I could be wrong. Ask her which Beluga whale has the grey marks on its side and back.

I thought the Hornbill was Stella. I love how she keeps stealing the binoculars, though I would have done the gag 3 times instead of just the 2.

Loved the TR. I like seeing how other places do their zoos. We have two here in Phoenix. The Phoenix Zoo and the Wildlife World Zoo. The Phoenix Zoo is a pretty nice zoo (when you consider the climate) while the Wildlife zoo is becoming more and more an amusement park. Everytime we go there they seem to have installed some kind of new ride.

Re: Melonballer returns to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.

I got some of my mom's pictures to share with you all. Let's GO!

On top of the carousel pavilion you can find this.

Pictures of the male tiger. I took these with her camera.

He is so cute!

Here are some pictures from the Wild Wonders show. This is a Seriema. In my first thread I have some great video of this guy.

A king Vulture

A walrus

Beluga Whales

I've got a few more to come.
