Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

Idaho Falls, ID

I love...

It's a small enough town to still feel safe and have that homey quality (although it's growing fast)
Close to all kinds of outdoor activities - Yellowstone, Targhee, Jackson, WY, rivers, lakes, skiing, etc.
Just a friendly town

I dislike..

The constant wind (or breeze as our weather people call it)
Country Skank (some people just need to realize that you can't squeeze 200 lbs into a pair of size 6 wranglers)
The lack of speciality food places

Did you just coin a new phrase? We don't get a lot of Country Skank in Southern California (just plain Skank, oh yeah, but not country).

Yeah. I miss Hops and their sweet rolls.

The area that I'm talking about that just can't seem to keep businesses is around Northpoint Mall in Alpharetta. That's where Bugaboo and Smokey Bones went missing - as well as Copelands.

I think you hit Atlanta spot on. Isn't Shakespeare's Tavern the one next to the adult novelty shop? I just always found that to be a perfect little example of Atlanta.
Yup! And the drug dealers on the corner. I love going though.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I was raised in Hesperia, CA. I lived in the L.A. area for seven years (Pasadena, Valley Village, Hollywood), and then I moved back to Apple Valley. So with this, I will discuss "The High Desert".

The High Desert is composed of several cities, towns and areas. Three cities/towns form a sort of "Mickey's Head", with Hesperia as the face and Victorville and Apple Valley as the ears. Other surrounding areas include Lucerne Valley, Pinion Hills, Oak Hills, Phelan, Adelanto and Barstow.
No one really knows where it is. If you simply tell people you're from the High Desert, they'll say "Oh, Palmdale/Lancaster?" You'll say no, the other High Desert. Most people will furrow their brow as though they're thinking really hard and say, "Palm Springs?" Most of California somehow blocks the High Desert out of their minds, and who can really blame them. Once you explain that the High Desert is "on the way to Vegas", people start to realize where you're from, and the conversation quickly changes topic.
Here are some good things about the High Desert:
*There are really some pretty places out here. The granite hills that you encounter throughout Apple Valley are like something out of a sci-fi movie.
*We have really clean air.
*Sometimes you can drive on really open roads.
*Somehow or another, we acquired our own dialect seperate from the rest of California. I point this out as a positive only because I like dialects. Some of the people out here say their "O"s as though they're from Minnesota or Wisconsin.
*Usually when we're mentioned in the news, it's just a shout-out from the weatherman.
*Everything has a parking lot, so you never have to pay for parking.
*Christmas Light displays are usually pretty nifty here.

Here are some not-so-good things about the High Desert:
*It's a big area with a small town mentality. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your point of view. I don't like it, myself.
*There is so much freakin' wind! Almost every freakin' day! I'm sorry, did you want to style your hair today? Not with 60mph winds, you don't.
*There is only one freeway out of here, and I live the furthest from it.
*The drivers out here are rude. Do yourself a favor and just stay off of Bear Valley Rd.
*There is no sense of history or heritage here. Just about everything that's old gets left to rot. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans lived out here, and we had the RR&DE Museum. When Roy and Dale passed away, their bitter son, Dusty, sold off the museum to Branson, MS.
*There are not a lot of jobs out here. Most of the work force in the High Desert commute. But as gas prices rise, that becomes less appealing. Along with this is that there are too many houses, not enough business. Things are finally coming to the desert, however.
*There really isn't a lot to do out here, unless you're into off-roading or horse-riding.
