Things you love and hate about where you live.

Pretty bored so I figured I do one of these threads. Post where you live(not where you're from) and why you love and hate it.

I live in Southaven, MS, which is right across the state line from Memphis, TN.

There is almost nothing I love about this place, except for the fact I met my wife here and had my wonderful kids.

What I hate: the weather. I'm from SoCal and I've lived in PA and NY, and this is the first place I've lived where the sun will be directly above you, 95 degrees out and it's raining.

The drivers. I can't believe people complain about LA and NY drivers. These people here have no concept of what a turn signal is, how to drive cautiously in bad weather and what a turning lane is for.

The region in general. Now granted, since we got this new amphitheater in Southaven, we're pulling in some big names, such as ZZ Top, Velvet Revolver and Alice in Chains. However, there just isn't much to do around here. The only thing there is to do around here is go to the casinos in Tunica or the numerous seedy pool halls.

Have at it people.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I live in Ocean Beach, in San diego, CA. We have been here for 8 years.
What I love:
1.I have lived here for 8 years with no rent increase (we have never even met our landlord, just mail the check to her po box, weird!)
2. every 4th of july I walk half a blcok, watch the fire works and walk half a block home.
3. even when it gets hot in the summer, I know its cooler here.

What I hate:
1. PARKING!! (we have street only so holiday weekends we do not go anywhere)
2. we have outgrown our house (8 years, 1 marriage and 2 kids later) but with no rent increase it is hard to make the leap!

In general, I LOVE San Diego and hope to stay here forever (born and raised)

If we do stay (and never win the lotto ) we will have to move away from the beach and go east and/or south.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I have lived in the same area of Los Angeles all my life, Boyle Heights to be exact ... and I love it!

I'm just blocks away from most major freeways ... 5, 101, 110, 10, 60 ... so getting around is easy (except for when there's traffic). It is also great being so close to Downtown L.A. especially since I work there too.

What I don't like is my neighbors, the smog and traffic. Yet I take it all in stride because there is always something to do around here at whatever hour.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I live in Irvine, CA. I've been in Orange County my whole life, and I love just about everything about it. Perfect weather, and of course Irvine is a beautiful city.

The only downside is we live in apartments that a vast majority of UCI students live in, too, so there's always a party close by. And they're usually pretty loud.

I won't tell you my city but... I hate how it is a DIRTY city ad not so safe. And further from Disneyland!

I love that it's close to all the cities I go to... Burbank, West Hollywood, Hollywood, downtown, etc. and work too

We're right by a few freeways. That is great!

Scotts Valley (right by Santa Cruz)

Things I love..just about everything

Things I hate.....nothing

But sometimes it seems almost too "white bread" or podunk and those are the times when I go into Santa Cruz or up to Sa Jose or San Francisco

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

What I love:
-there must be no cute women on the mountain. Not to be mean, but like yesterday I ran to Stater Brothers (chinese food craving.) at 6:30... totally got checked out by 3 cute guys (a cop, a fire fighter, and another guy...). That never happens!
-prices up here are reasonable.

Hate:
-Lack of resturaunts (I love chinese take out. And there's one!). If I am craving McDonalds I have to drive 20 minutes to get to one. Although that could explain why I've lost 15 lbs in 3 months.
-The roads.
-Some of the people. They are very "provencial." in the bad way.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I love the weather most of the time. (summers do get very hot). I love that there is basically no traffic ever. I love m work is about 8 miles away. I love that we have a lot of shopping choices now. When I first moved here there was nothing at all. I love when the military planes fly over. I love the beautiful clean dry air. We also get gorgeous sunsets.

I hate that there is nothing to do here and to do anything its at least an hour drive. I hate that there is so much HUD housing here. It tends to bring in a bad element. I also hate that they were having people from really bad areas down below move here for hud/cheap housing and more than that I hate that they don't try to live a better life here, they just bring problems with them. I hate some areas here are so well know for being horribly bad areas if someone mentions the street everyone will give a knowing nod. I hate going to some stores and people are shopping in flannel dirty jammie pants, slippers and curlers in their hair. I'm also worried since they have built and are still building so many houses that aren't selling they will all go hud as well. If that happens we most likely will move.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

well well well...my opinions on The Biggest Little City in the World, Reno:

LIKES:
being able to enjoy 4 seasons without being overly snowed on
clean air
45mins from Lake Tahoe
Semi-smaller city feel (very different from Oxnard/Ventura where i lived the first 23 years of my life)
living 12miles from work and it still only takes me 15mins to get there
the hospital i work for is the best employer i've ever had

DISLIKES:
so far from all our friends in so cal and Disneyland
can't fulfill my dream of working Haunt
lack of concerts by people i'd like to see (but if you like kenny rogers, he's here ever year!)
the heat in summer...i hate it when it gets over 100F, anything else is tolerable
the HUGE amount of white trash/meth freaks we have here, there are seriously more toothless hookers here than anywhere else in the world methinks...

Dustin and I do plan to move back to so cal, most likely somewhere in the OC, eventually...but (as morbid as this sounds) it'll have to wait until after my mom passes away becuase then we'll have two paid for houses here to sell and might actually be able to afford a house down there....it'll happen, just not anytime soon

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

Lets see, the condo we live in is WAY WAY WAY too small... We need to move out of it ASAP, its just getting to be to much of a struggle to deal with such limited space.

We dont care for our neighbors, or feel like we fit in where we are I guess.

However, once I drive out of our condominium complex I love where I live. I am about 15 minutes from downtown Seattle. I just think its very pretty up here, and there are some cool little areas around where I live.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I live in a place called La Conchita, which is an eclectic little hamlet about nine blocks long, just across Highway 101 from the Pacific Ocean, almost in the middle between Ventura and Santa Barbara, CA...

Things I love about it...

The weather...the fact that a beach is so near even though I never go there!

The eclectic "artist colony" feel of the place. While we do have paved roads, there are no sidewalks.

It's a place where everyone basically knows one another, and you'd feel safe leaving your doors unlocked at night (although we don't)

There's a real "live and let live" feeling.

Between Ventura and my my house, I get to drive one of the prettiest drives in the world, almost every day (along the "rincon' on the 101, which is also the "1" (PCH) here.

Things I don't like:

There's only one outlet in or out, and it involves turning left with no signal against sometimes very busy Northbound 101 traffic if you need to head to Ventura.

The nearest business of any kind is either five miles north in Carpinteria, or 15 miles south in Ventura.

Oh, and there's the matter of that little hill behind us.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

I live in Portland, Oregon(no, I've never met Stinkerbell irl):

I love that we have trees everywhere.
I love that even though well over a million people live in and near this city we still have that small town feel.
I love that I am less than 10 minutes away from the most beautiful scenic area in the world(The Columbia River Gorge)
I love that Ski Season can go from November thru August.
I love that Sports Illustrated rated us as one of the top 10 hockey towns in North America(and we don't even have an NHL team)
I love all the fountains Portland has(I discover, on average, a new one every year or so) to offer.
I love our Volcanos.....I was even born on the side of an extinct one.
I love our Airport: It's called an International Airport even though it only has non-stop flights to 3 international cities(Vancounver BC, Frankfurt Germany, and Tokyo Japan)....it's only a few minutes away from home and has non-stop flights to the John Wayne

I hate the traffic....our wise city leaders keep building trains that no one wants to ride instead of new roads.
I hate the Ice Storms....That Gorge I love does do one bad thing....it funnels an East wind right into this community which can, if the weather is "perfect" cause horrible Ice storms in the Early part of January.
I hate the Springs....I like rain when it isn't mixed with sunshine; something about having to have your windshield wipers going while wearing sunglasses makes sleepy kinda grumpy.

Most of all I like it because it's home

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

This'll be easy.

I live in Vancouver, WA.

Love = Nothing

Hate = Everything

Now, if I was a person who loved, say, rednecks, ugly suburban sprawl, suicide inducing dismal year round weather, an overinflated housing market, local culture on par with that of a termite's mound, incompetent police, greedy local governments who are happy to sell out the county to developers, increasingly awful traffic, an influx of seemingly tree-phobic new residents, and the world's absolutely worst, most depressing weather (did I already mention that? Oh well...) then I'd love it here. But, since I enjoy things like sunshine, happiness, culture and such, this town pretty much blows.

Re: Things you love and hate about where you live.

Vallejo, CA is a mixbag. Many people despise it and many people love it.

In general, I like living here, but I'd rather live somewhere else.

I love the diversity of the city. I've never been in a city as small as Vallejo is and yet still be as diverse. I like that I got to grow up in such an environment, rather then some whitewashed suburb.

I love the small amount of history the city does have, with Mare Island being the first Pacific naval shipyard, being one of the many capitals of California, and other things, its nice to live in a city that actually has some worthwhile history.

There's quite a few things I hate though

I hate that we have very limited shopping available. There is no bookstores at all here, used or new. The used stores get driven out by outrageous rent demands or unable to compete with Wal Mart, and the new stores don't want to bother with the city. The city government is very business-unfriendly, both to small and large businesses. I hate that many citizens would rather have a Super Wal Mart then build up our downtown district with small businesses and nice shops, and fill our emptying shopping centers.

The city is also getting really dirty lately. Lots of graffiti has been popping up with the city not making efforts to clean it up, or unable to because they have no money (another thing I hate, poor money management). Trash takes over many streets. Old broken down cars are left to become eye sores, etc. Little things like that which add up to an overall scuzzyness of the city.

Some days I'd rather live in a city like Pleasant Hill or Concord which don't have the negatives that Vallejo have, but they also don't have the positives.
