Relationship Deal-Breakers

So let's say you meet another person who interests you at a club or work or school or wherever. You strike up a conversation and you and he or she are really hitting it off. You share interests, you like the same movies, you laugh at her or his jokes, you drink the same brand of beer, etc... Along comes one thing that is an immediate turn-off, enough that you say you are going back away and would prefer that he or she didn't follow you. What is that thing? (All this is in a romantic context, not friendship, etc.)

With me it might be smoking. Not only have I always considered it kind of icky, but I am mildly allergic to cigarette smoke (not cigar or pipe smoke, but cigarette). Smoking is just not something I think I could tolerate in a significant other. I have friends that smoke and I don't mind that they do as long as they don't blow it in my face, but I don't think that's something I could deal with in a girlfriend. So what's yours?

Definitely smoking. My dad died of lung cancer complications and I won't go though that again if I can help it.

Plus it is just disgusting to be around. IMHO.

Re: Relationship Deal-Breakers

It's a moot point for me now, but back when it mattered....

1. Being GUD or having just relocated from a GUD place from which her family did not join her.
2. Illegal drug use
3. Loyalties to UCLA

an over confident personality, especially when it seemed forced...also if they addressed their friends as dude and did that nose in the air thing for "what's up"....I hate that.

teeth, yellow or really crooked.

-Primping. I don't want a guy who is girlier/takes longer to get ready than I do.
-taking oneself too seriously. I am so not that way and make fun of myself sooooo much and if a guy does that... dude.

I assume it goes without saying that they have to at least accept the Disney thing.

Definitely smoking. Cooled a possible relationship in college because she smoked. And it wasn't just the cigarettes. (But that was in the sixties.)

that's a non issue for me as long as they don't mind me going. My Bf will not go to Disneyland with me. He doesn't like it at all. He went once when he was 8, in the 60's. He did say he would go to epcot one day.

Turn offs for me:
1) smoking
2) chauvinism/being patronizing or condescending
3) someone who takes himself too seriously

Re: Relationship Deal-Breakers

Back when it mattered, my insecurities did not allow me to effectively cope with a woman who has deep emotional friendships with men whom she communicates with regularly. I know, I suck, but I just can’t deal with it.

Re: Relationship Deal-Breakers

Simple answer for me, closed minded people. If you can't accept people for who they are then "be gone." Hold on, did I just contradict myself? If I don't like closed minded people because they don't accept people for who they are then I should accept these people for who they are. Who cares I still don't like them.

Seriously though, dating a person that was closed minded would cause me to walk away. Heck if I was closed minded I would loose probably half of my friends.

Re: Relationship Deal-Breakers

How they treat people in the service industry such as waiters, doormen, etc.

If they treat them like "the hired help" I'd kick 'em to the curb.

GUD= geographically undesirable.

A touch of syphilis is usually a turn off to me.
