Re: What has your city/town been taken over with?

Tiny little Mexican restaurants. Tiny little Chinese restaurants. Tiny little mercados that I'm sure sell food as well. I'm sure the food is outstanding but not sure I'm willing to chance it.

Friggin Wal-Marts. We now have three, a fourth being completed and they're trying to put in a fifth one, all within ten minutes of each other. The county blocked the fifth one, so they're using a state law that allows them to challenge in a neighboring county in court to push it down our throats. I hate that company and I can't stand everyone who shops there and ignores the effect they're having on our local economy. Disgusting.

I hate that my town is blocking all those things. It's a big deal the fact that we have Staters and Subway because they're chain stores. We have a Starbucks and that's a shame thing... But the bad thing is the service everywhere up here except the chains is shoddy at best...

I just noticed something: tweakers. We have a block of tweakers.

Same here. When they were building the supercenter in the next town over (a tiny town of only 9000 people) they were trying to build a supercenter in my city, 10 minutes way on the same street. Absolutely ridiculous, and then all the Wal Mart shopper/defenders come out to say it "creates jobs", ignoring the fact it kills any identity of the town as well as all the small businesses.

Thankfully the city has successfully blocked it, but Wal Mart won't give up.

Crappy little instant Chinese food joints - like Panda Express.

Banks. Seems like every new building going up is a bank. How exciting.

we also have about 4 or 5 vallartas and they are building a new one. I have not been in one, but it's a large Hispanic supermarket.

Targets. On an 8 mile drive between work and my house I have my choice of three different Targets to stop at. No complaints about this though, I love Target.

Too many restaurants and service jobs. Taco Bell, McDonalds, Starbucks, you name it we got it. They just opened a Fuddrucker's here too.

Not enough technical jobs, corporate. Basically, our city is now a sleeper town.

People commute from Modesto to and from San Francisco everyday. There is no way too be a family member or a good parent that way.
A former co worker takes care of clearing all the Mosquitos from the pools that are filled with green goop from lack of care.
West Nile is a problem with all the homes in foreclosure.

I live in fast-food Hell, within 3 miles of my house there are at least 29 chain fast-food restaurants (and now they're building duplicates within a mile of each other). And, that's not counting the little independent fast food places. Anybody up for a hamburger?

I don't remember Modesto EVER being, or attempting to be anything but a sleeper town. (grandparents lived there. I lived in nearby Tracy for a couple of years.) But commuting to SF is just crazy!

I know at least 6 families who do this. 3am in the morning, not back until 8 at night sometimes. I sometimes wonder how their kids make it through.
