My son wants a Mix Max for Xmas

Wow, pretty cool looking. I've not seen them advertised, but then he watches the Disney Channel pretty religiously. They must advertise them.

Anyone have any experience with them?

Re: My son wants a Mix Max for Xmas

I have read a lot of reviews about them, but never actually seen one in person. Aside from playing the Mix Max clips exclusively there isnt much different and so far the reviews I have read havent been all that great. For the price a video ipod would have more storage and seems to be more durable.

These have I think 512MB built in expandable to 2GB, not a lot for a video device IMO. Plus the mixmax clips are like $20 each.

Are the mixmax clips all that it plays? Will it accept a regular MPEG/AVI format off a computer? Seems like they are selling for around $99, that substantially less that a video ipod, right?

For a 7.8 year old?

Yes it plays video and MP3s which you will need to download software onto your computer (I believe from a CD) and then upload or purchase music / video to load on. 512MB is about 120 songs (not sure how much video that is...anyone?). Additional SD cards for a 7 year old can mean things getting lost, plus you have to download it to the card, etc.

The big reason to have this over an iPod is the MixMax cards (Disney generated content) which only plays on this device and will get costly, but if your child loves Disney and you are willing for Birthdays etc to get him more of the cards then its a good option. It is something unique.

The iPod Nano with 4GB plays video and audio which a lot more storage and an easy user interface (iTunes), and is more at $149, but worth the investment IMO. However even with they you would need to upload, download or purchase music / video.

(mind you....this is advice from a person getting her 4 year old daughter a kids digital camera for Christmas so what do i know!)

I think there are several items with the Mix Max name, they have a camera, mp3 and full player. The $29.00 one may have just been for playing the mixmax clips.

(and I think I need to join an online shopping help group, because I already know that DisneyShopping has these today for $5 off...I have spent too much time internet shopping this year).

Re: My son wants a Mix Max for Xmas

Thanks for all the great feedback. I was hoping it would play videos he creates with his own camera, that I can manupulate and resize on the computer, but if this unit *only* plays Disney® video *exclusivley* then it would not be a good thing. Plus I rip cd's (like Highschool musical 2 for example) then put them on a old hand-me-down mp3 player (in case something goes wrong and it gets deleted) he has or on to a cd-r disc for playing in his cd player. (he's seven, I don't give originals). I back everything I buy up.

I'm really not sure this is that the best investment for him at his age, we'll see, maybe if the price comes down a little.

Thanks

Well we got it for him, Costco has the PotC model with preloaded PotC clips. $79.99. He'll love it. I can help him put other clips on it from the computer.
