    Names locals don't use

Ever notice the rest of the world has different slang terms for where you live than you and the rest of the locals? Or perhaps they just pronounce it differently? I can think of a few for here:

Los Angeles - Locals: loss an-jel-iss (or ess), Brits: loss an-jel-eeez
Orange County - Locals: OC, everyone else: "the" OC, or LA
California - Locals: CA, Cal, Calif., non-locals: Cali
The San Fernando Valley - in LA: "The" Valley, everyone else: which valley do you mean?
northern California - in northern CA: NorCal, in southern CA: NoCal (we do it partly as a play on our SoCal, and partly because it pisses off the NoCalers)

Can you think of more for where YOU live?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Me: Long Beach. Others The LBC. (I still give blank stares for this one)

Me: Huntington. (as in I grew up in Huntington) Others: Huntington Beach.

Me (typing): SCP Others: Couth Coast Plaza

Oh, and my favorite thing to piss lots of people off: San Fransicso and south is Central California. Northern California is Marin County north. (This comes from my sister who lives in the REAL Nor Cal.)

    Re: Names locals don't use

and don't forget my birthplace, Slimey (Simi) Valley.

But locals use those I'm talking about the ones that just grate on a local's ears. Personally, I can't stand hearing people call CA "Cali". I think it's made worse because the abbreviation of the name comes off as if they're trying to sound all local, like someone calling West Hollywood "We Ho" (which is a local nickname), only the name they use is one NOT used by people who live in CA.

    Thought of another example:

San Francisco - locals: San Francisco, non-locals: "Frisco"

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

Yes! True sign of a tourist or someone who hasn't live here long is calling California "Cali" and San Francisco "Frisco". San Fransicso is just that unless you're there, then it is "The City".

It still Huntingon to the locals! That's what I say, until I talk to the "others".

There is, however, Cal State Long Beach vs. Long Beach State! It's Cal State Long Beach!! If it was Long Beach State, it would say Long Beach State University. Just like San Diego State University.

Yes! San Francisco will never be "the city" to me!
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Oh my, when I started college met a lot of people from other states they would always say Cali and it made me want to puke.

And I grew up in Orange County (and Riverside County- shared custody thing) and I NEVER once called it The OC.

Hey I'm a mere few miles from your birthplace in Slimy Valley - lol.

I hear this from a mix of people that pronounce Valencia val-en-shee-ya. It's val-en-see-ya people!!

How about people here calling the freeways by saying "the 5" or "the 405" and not just I5 or I405 or simply by just calling it by its number. People from everywhere but CA seem to say it the latter. They laugh when I go back east and say something like, "do I take the 495??"

But it USED to be Long Beach State. My sister went to Long Beach State. I still call it that once in a while.

OK. Those from outside the area say Cahuenga and Tujunga.

What do these three streets have in common: Katella, Sepulveda & Willow?

Where is Tin Can Beach? (I still call it that.) Or course I still say I'm in the Character Shop.

Highway 39 anyone? Harbor or Pasadena Freeway (11) Long Beach Freeway (7) Garden Grove Freeway, Newport Freeway, Riverside Freeway, Santa Monica Freeway. I don't eve know what is still used. I use them all. I like to confuse people.

Oh dear. The mind of a 43 year old native is on the loose.

As a former resident of Huntington, nothing bugs me more than when people try to be cool and call it "HB". STFU.
