TR - O'nut does Hawaii: The Big Island

This is gonna take me a few days, so please be patient. But here's the beginning.

    Day One

First Class to Kona, and on Hawaii flights they offer mai tais. So, we had a few Yea, it was 8am Hawaii time but, so what, we were on vacation!

Our first glimpse of Hawaii! That’s the town of Hawi, on the northern part of the Big Island.

The drive to the hotel from the airport. Lots of lava flows. This flow was from 1801!

That’s Mauna Kea, with snow! I can’t tell you how weird it was to be in Hawaii, with temps where we were at in the 80’s, looking up at snow.

    Our resort.

The room. It was nice, but next to the elevator machinery. So it was kinda loud with that whirring humming elevator machinery noise.

Our view. If you look REALLY close, you can see the ocean in the distance.

OK, enough with the room, lets drink! We paid for a daily $20 resort card that got you scuba rental, tennis course use, and something else I can’t recall. We used none of those. We got this card for the 2 mai tais (or similar cockatil) a day! Here’s day one! I mean they were $10.95 as it was, so doing this resort card thing was a deal for drinks!

That evening we drove down to Kailua-Kona for dinner. Ate at a place that’s near and dear to my heart, Quinns Almost By The Sea restaurant. On our walk there we passed the oldest church in Hawaii, that dates back to the 1820’s. The moon was just at the right spot so I snapped this shot.

By 9:00 we were exhausted, so we headed back to the hotel for bed.

    Day Two

Got up and headed off for the Tex Drive In! This place has great food, including traditional Hawaiian plate lunches. But what they’re really known for are malasadas, Portuguese donuts covered in sugar and filled with crème! Here’s me chowing down on a Bavarian crème filled one. Messy, but good!

Nearby is the Waipio Valley overlook. You can’t drive down to it, but you can hike or ATV.

Next on the agenda is to head to the northern part of the island to Hawi. To get there we took the “mountain” route (there’s a coastal route as well), and here’s the view looking from the summit down to the Kohala Coast (where the resort is located where we stayed).

Here’s a lookout area east of Hawi. Again, this lookout is at the end of a road, and you can’t drive down. Oh, and past my head about 2,500 miles, is California

OK, we’re now in Hawi. Here’s one of the famous statues of King Kamehameha.

Cool restaurant we ate at with awesome food. It’s one of the best in Hawaii in a really cool, old building.

By the way, this photo was taken from an ice cream place across the street, that had the BEST ice cream. If you're ever there, have some delicious ice cream!

Re: TR - O'nut does Hawaii: The Big Island

Thanks for the great TR, Onut! I'm looking forward to the rest of it and trying not to be insanely jealous. I haven't been there in years...

Hey...that statue of King Kamehameha. ...there's one that looks EXACTLY like it in the National Capitol building. We saw it last year. Our guide said it was stuck over in the corner not as a slight to the Hawaiian people, but because the floor almost collapsed because of the weight. Not that the king needed to shed a few pounds....something about what it was made out of...

    But I digress.

Looks like you had a wonderful time! We want more!

Great shirt. Fight on! Nice pics, too. I haven't been to the Big Island in almost 20 years. I suddenly feel a need to go back.

Great pictures and report. Although I had never heard of Malasadas they look like a piece of heaven wrapped in pastry. I am green with envy with your travels but so glad that your willing to share pictures and reports.
