    Wristwatch dilemma

    Hello all.

I have a wristwatch that is several years old that I noticed was running several minutes slow. So I replaced the battery. After a couple days it started running slow again so I took it back in and they cleaned it out but the battery was still good. A couple days after this I noticed it started running about 5-7 hours slow.

Ok. So the watch is a cheap Timex and it is not worth repairing so I figure I will get a new one. No big deal.

I was thinking about getting a nice Mickey Mouse watch or another Disney inspired watch. And this is where the dilemma comes in. I was talking to my mom about this and she told me that she had read that it is not a good idea to get a Mickey Mouse watch because it may be looked at negatively if wearing it in a job interview and the interviewer were to notice. She didn't say why -- she said she just remembered reading it somewhere.

It's not that big of a deal. I could wear a generic watch during interviews and a Disney watch at other times. But is this true? Does wearing a Disney watch negatively effect things like performance during a job interview?

Wear sleeves that are long enough so the interviewer can see the watch outline but not what the watch looks like.

Not if you interview at Disney...

Everything you do/say/wear/smell like - counts at an interview.
I have had several people compliment my watch in business situations (Skagen from Costco).

Get a "professional" looking watch at Costco or some other non-expensive place. All metal and sleek/minimalist would be my reccomendation. Spend your real bux on a kick@$$ Disney watch at Company D or Character Warehouse.
How much do we have to pay to get MiceChat Old?

You know, Swatch watches are looking really nice today ... and they have quite a few professional looking ones too.

Swatch watches??? I loved those. But you have to get that cool metal guard that goes around the face. lol

Honestly, wearing a Mickey Mouse watch along with nice business attire is something I would highly recommend as I have experienced great success with it. The watch adds just enough personality and whimsy that (if even noticed) presents you as a real person and not a personality-lacking automaton. I've had a few instances where an interviewer noticed my Mickey watch and it led to a fun side conversation and broke that interviewer-interviewee barrier, which is very much a good thing as whatever causes you to be remembered over other potentials helps greatly in your chances of being offered a job. So don't sweat it, wear Mickey with pride!

My favorite watch was a bugs bunny baseball watch. Had it for years. If you insist on wearing a watch, get one you'll love.

I was told the same thing about disney checks - that if you ever got audited, you wouldn't be taken seriously.

But, I've found my mickey watch and ring to be great conversation starters - I think they show a little about your personality.

    Re: Wristwatch dilemma

Well, as a former highly paid executive at a number of "high-powered" financial services firms, I always wore my Mickey watch, and if anyone ever said anything, it was in terms of admiration.

In fact, I would opine that anyone who does not hire someone simply because they are wearing a Mickey Mouse watch likely has no sense of humor, and would not be the sort of place you'd want to work at anyhow.

And if you were asked in an interview, just state plainly that you wear it to remind you of the Disney Parks commitments to quality, user experience, commitment to excellence, and attendance to detail. That should do the trick.

    Re: Wristwatch dilemma

I hate wearing watches because I have really skinny wrists, but I have 2 Mickey ones, a Goofy one, a Tigger one and a Pooh & Tigger one besides my plain silver one with a black leather band (a cheap Cherokee watch I got at Target for $15).

    Re: Wristwatch dilemma

I used to wear a Mickey Mouse watch all the time, and never had a problem with job interviews... in fact it led me to get two different jobs, as it started great conversations with the interviewers.

However, my last MM watch finally died, and I started wearing one of the PotC watches you got at Disneyland with every so many $$$ you spent. LOVE IT... and have worn it to many a meeting and seminar. Always have people comment on it (and in a positive way)...best part...probably keeps the best time of any watch I have EVER owned!!!

So, go, wear your MM watch and have a great interview!!

I agree that you should wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. If it's your favorite watch and it gives you confidence, go for it! I've worn a Mickey Mouse watch for at LEAST the past 10 years or so, and have another I'm trying to repair. Both of these are more "business looking", if there is such a thing. One has a leather wristband and has Mickey sitting crosslegged with his head in his hands. The other is silver and simply has a small Mickey on top with "MM" underneath.

The first one wasn't exactly air tight and is now tarnishing badly.

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas on how to clean the tarnish on the inside?

Sorry Mac Daddy I have no idea how to clean your watch. I'm sure someone here does, though!

This all certainly gives me things to think about. And I have seen Disney watches that it is hard to tell it is a Disney watch unless you really look at it, which during an interview would be kind of creepy!

So this all certainly is food for thought. Thanks for all of your input!

This is the first I've heard of something Disney having an negative effect on a job interview. Seriously I have no idea.

I know that most interviewers do have bias opinions on what you wear and how you present yourself, so I guess I would be a little cautious of what to wear for the big day.

But I say get the Disney watch you love and just don't wear the watch during the interview. if you are that concerned about it.

Or get two watches. One Disney and one business professional type watch. That's what I would do.
