I work for Cardinal Health, which supplies half of the medical supplies used in the United States. I just started there in late September, after having worked for FedEx for four and a half years. I loved this new job at first, mainly because I was getting more than 40 hours per week and because my vacation and benefits kicked in on my very first day.
However, this last month has been pure hell. Our schedule is supposed to be from noon until eight thirty, although it's known when you get hired that you leave when the work is done. Since September, I can think of only three times when we left before nine o'clock. Ten o'clock is about the average time we leave. This week has been especially trying on my nerves.
We had three people out on Tuesday, which is our biggest day and yet somehow we managed to get out by midnight, which surprised me. Last night we had two people out and we got done at eleven thirty, which was a shock because our boss held 2 facility meetings so for about one hour total we were missing pickers.
So, my problem is that our facility manager seems to only care about her precious receiving department, because they're the only ones that get help when they're shorthanded. Then, during the meeting, she hands out little bonus checks to all of the receiving people for having worked six days a week for the last six months. Now I know that sounds hardcore, but it's not because receiving is a cake walk. All they do is ride around on their reach trucks and put pallets up on the racks. Almost no physical labor is done.
Do you think any of us in the picking department got any recognition? Of course not. We only work five days a week but we don't get to go home at a certain time like they do. We also do our work without help, as they received about 10 extra people from other facilities that come from out of town to help them.
Then, to make sure I was really pissed off, she(FM)decides to screw with my vacation that I had for September, which was being planned for WDW. I was supposed to be off from the 8th until the 21st, with the first week being used for WDW and SeaWorld. Now I have to push it back because they're giving the first week to someone with more seniority, even though it's supposed to be first come first serve. The real kicker about it is that the 8th is my anniversary, and that would have been our first day in the park.
Well, that's enough venting and sorry that it's so long. The only good news is that I'm most likely going to be transferring to one of the day shift jobs that are open, which is nice because as it is right now I don't get home until my kids are asleep. Plus, this job allowed me to pay for my daughter's cheerleading trip without having to strain as I would have had to do had I stayed at FedEx.
So, what do you do and do you love it or hate it?
