Your Job-Love it or Hate it?

I work for Cardinal Health, which supplies half of the medical supplies used in the United States. I just started there in late September, after having worked for FedEx for four and a half years. I loved this new job at first, mainly because I was getting more than 40 hours per week and because my vacation and benefits kicked in on my very first day.

However, this last month has been pure hell. Our schedule is supposed to be from noon until eight thirty, although it's known when you get hired that you leave when the work is done. Since September, I can think of only three times when we left before nine o'clock. Ten o'clock is about the average time we leave. This week has been especially trying on my nerves.

We had three people out on Tuesday, which is our biggest day and yet somehow we managed to get out by midnight, which surprised me. Last night we had two people out and we got done at eleven thirty, which was a shock because our boss held 2 facility meetings so for about one hour total we were missing pickers.

So, my problem is that our facility manager seems to only care about her precious receiving department, because they're the only ones that get help when they're shorthanded. Then, during the meeting, she hands out little bonus checks to all of the receiving people for having worked six days a week for the last six months. Now I know that sounds hardcore, but it's not because receiving is a cake walk. All they do is ride around on their reach trucks and put pallets up on the racks. Almost no physical labor is done.

Do you think any of us in the picking department got any recognition? Of course not. We only work five days a week but we don't get to go home at a certain time like they do. We also do our work without help, as they received about 10 extra people from other facilities that come from out of town to help them.

Then, to make sure I was really pissed off, she(FM)decides to screw with my vacation that I had for September, which was being planned for WDW. I was supposed to be off from the 8th until the 21st, with the first week being used for WDW and SeaWorld. Now I have to push it back because they're giving the first week to someone with more seniority, even though it's supposed to be first come first serve. The real kicker about it is that the 8th is my anniversary, and that would have been our first day in the park.

Well, that's enough venting and sorry that it's so long. The only good news is that I'm most likely going to be transferring to one of the day shift jobs that are open, which is nice because as it is right now I don't get home until my kids are asleep. Plus, this job allowed me to pay for my daughter's cheerleading trip without having to strain as I would have had to do had I stayed at FedEx.

So, what do you do and do you love it or hate it?

    Sucks about your job.

Funny thing for me, I work the receiving department at the distribution center for Wickes Furniture. But I'm only going to be here another week. 29th will be my last day because I got a new job with ULINE. I'm getting a new job because they're closing this distribution center because Wickes filed for Chapter 11 earlier this month. They're hoping for someone to buy them out but it doesn't look like that's happening. Everyone I work with is getting laid off, if they haven't already so I had to find a new job. I went in for the interview and assessment tests yesterday and I got it. I'll be getting paid more per hour than Wickes plus there are lots of bonuses and stuff like that. But the job I still have here at Wickes is easy. I'm sitting down all day in front of a computer in my own office. I pretty much get to do whatever I want because my boss is so laid back with me. I get all my stuff done on time without errors so I get rewarded that way. It was an easy job, sometimes fast, sometimes slow but I'll miss it.

I'm a teacher and love my job, well 90% of the time. Teaching aspect is great, but dealing with the Political issue is another. Running out of paper and teaching supplies is frustrating since the District has no money. Wouldn't you think Paper and pencils would be high priority, NOT. My 2 cents..

    I'm a substitite teacher.
I love being able to gove them back. I love it when it's easier assignments and I can joke a little with them. I hate kids going out of their way to mess with a sub, and I hate when techers leave ill-prepared lesson plans for me (I'm talking 30 minutes worth of work for an hour).
All of my husband's co-workers are asking when i'll get credentialed, but I don't want to teach as a career. I think he'd like the $ and insurance stuff, but it's hard to get a job here without the right connections/reducation- I've met subs in the disctrict for three years still hoping for a job.

My education was for photojournalism. I got off that bandwagon adfter not being able to find work and not being very sure of my skills. Saw a college friend of mine, she's been told by someone in the field to choose another career path, cause of all the layoffs at the LA Times and OC Register...

Re: Your Job-Love it or Hate it?

I work for a non-profit that offers support to people with disabilities. Overall, I like my job, but there's days I want to go home as soon as I get there. And I know I'm not the only one. Some days are really rewarding, and then there's days I want to smash the phone with a mallet because it rings every 5 seconds. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping out but when people get too needy and act like you have to hold their hand every step of the way... that's a bit much. No wonder more than half the people in my office smoke!

But it still beats my last job. It got to the point my former bosses nitpicked at me so much I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. They'd give me like 10 things to do and then have a fit because I couldn't get it all done in 20 minutes. What I did was very time consuming so even though it looked like I wasn't doing much on paper, I was working my a$$ off every day. I stayed up to 2 hours late almost every day too but it still wasn't enough. No matter what I did I couldn't please them. I literally went into work shaking like a leaf nearly every day the last few months I was there. It was really bad. I'd come home and cry every night or conk out from mental & emotional exhaustion.

sorry to hear about your job. However, I am unemployed right now.....company closed down during my chemotherapy and radiation treatment. However, as well, during my time off on medical leave, I was searching for another job. I was not happy there - no room for advancement. What had happened was that I had PERFECTED my job.....and if I moved up, someone else might not do it nearly as efficiently and with the care that I did. So, I sort of pigeon-holed myself. So much for doing a good job, right!?

I hope things look up for you. Hang in there.......or come back to So.Cal!

I work at a local Disney Store and I really do like being there. I've only been there for a couple of months. I am really starting to miss my old job. I have absolutely no intentions of going back to where I worked, but I have some standing job offers at other places that I may go look into.

If I didn't have the wife and kids believe me, I'd be back there in a nanosecond. Sorry to hear about your situation, and most days I just keep thinking that at least I have a job, which lots of people would kill for. Then there are the 13 hour days like this Tuesday and Thursday which make me want to start dismembering people. It might not be so bad if my job wasn't physical.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'm just glad that the week is finally over with.

Re: Your Job-Love it or Hate it?

I'm not working right now. I hated the center I was working at (a few people here knew how bad it was), winter was coming, I don't know how to drive in snow/ice, and the drive was really dangerous. My mom was like "why don't you quit when it snows..." Worked out well-ish. I didn't like it there. I gave notice.

I love preschoolers. I hate bad programs. I don't know how to say this without sounding like a brat or snob: I have high standards when it comes to preschool and I have a pretty strong belief system/philosophy on preschool teaching. The last school I was at it was all about ratio (and she put people in without units and tried to pass them off to count in ratio), the turn over was high, there was no consistancy, teachers always called in sick, there were always videos playing, and they were mean to the kids. Hated it. When I talked to the director she basically said "this is how we do things here." But when I am in a school with a great program. Love!

I love my job. I work with some amazing people and its like one huge family there. In the almost 2 years that Ive been working there, theres only been maybe 2 days where I even remotely disliked my job.

I just wish that I had stayed in the Army. I would have been able to retire will full benefits at age 39.

Re: Your Job-Love it or Hate it?

I am in my 10th year as program specialist at an elementary school (my 35th since I started teaching), and I like it more now than I did years ago. I'm basically the go-to guy, data and tech guru, testing coordinator, English Learner coordinator, library supervisor, textbook getter, and peer coach. In my years of teaching, I've been a music teacher, elementary classroom teacher, technology resource teacher, and program specialist.

It's totally crazy at times, but I thrive on variety and change. I'm sure it would drive some people insane. Until this assignment, I had never been at the same school in the same position more than seven years, but after ten here, I'm pretty sure I'll finish out my last three in this position until I retire.

It helps that I'm well respected by both current and former colleagues, and I have a reputation that reaches well beyond my school. It also helps that I'm usually done for the day at 2:30, giving me time to ride my bike after work, if I so desire. (I also ride to work most days, since it's less than 4 miles from home.)
Have bicycle, will ride. Finished 2012 with 10,089 miles, 683 hours, and 482,000 feet of elevation gain.
    2013: 201 rides, 8171 miles, 544 hours, 480K feet.
    2014 so far: 6956 miles, 398,000 feet

I don't really like my job. But there is no job in Delaware that can truly make me love it. However, I am happy to have a job though.
