I loved the Postal Service, an ex-GF got me started on them, and then we broke up, so it kind of ruined them for me, but I still love that CD. Especially the District Sleeps:

"I'll wear my badge... a vinyl sticker with bigh block letters adherent to my chest

I am not permanent"

I read that they chose that name because they would mail each other their tracks via US mail because they were on opposite coasts. So they picked the Postal Service.
Are they done for good?

happy- fun 80's era pop. we have a great radio station here that plays almost entirely 80's (along with some late 70's & early 90's). i have to be able to sing along though.

pissed off- hard rock. Chevelle, Rage Against the Machine, etc...

Love- Air Supply, Peter cetera, Blessid Union of souls

Calming (work)-classical and string arrangements. I have a number of those String Quartet tribute to... CDs. those are great for work!

misc- Sister hazel, John mayer, Jason mraz

I love tool, and Rage also, they are great. System of the Down has some great angry songs too!

As for the string cover CDs, I have one that covers the Smiths, and one that covers Coldplay, and it is amazing!!!!!!

Anyway, as much as I like songs, I'm going to list here a different way, by CD/artist:

A good CD for...

...driving around an urban landscape late at night: anything by Tosca, Peace Orchestra or Kruder & Dorfmeister

...taking a road trip on the open highway: Son Volt, Wilco & Uncle Tupelo (all connected bands, yes)

...having an uber silly day: They Might Be Giants – Apollo 18

...having a pensive picnic (whatever that means): Tori Amos – Under the Pink

...feeling grovely: Tom Waits – The Bone Machine or Frank's Wild Years

...taking a leisurely trip through the city (aka feeling metropolitan): Saint Etienne – Good Humor

...enjoying an afternoon at the beach: The Beach Boys - Sunflower & Surf's Up

Sad would definitely be the one that I am listening to right now, "American Pie". After I heard the news of the death of Peter Jennings, I just sat at my computer listening to it, over and over again. "Send in the Clowns" sung by Sinatra was at the top a couple of weeks ago.

My musical mood changes all of the time, so it all depends. I love love songs, and the love songs I like are always sad or at least hint at sadness. As of late, "A Time for Us" from Romeo and Juliet (the 60s version of course) was at the top of my list. "Yesterday" (the Beatles) is always up top, followed by "She Loves You" (the Beatles).

When I want to feel victorious, I always listen to Dylan's "Positively 4th Street" or "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkle.

And of course, soundtracks always adjust to my mood. Sometimes it will be "Poltergeist" or "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and other times, Disney's "Sleeping Beauty".
