I agree. The poll options were ridiculously worded to paint anyone who might disagree with the author as a horrible person who purposely tries to cause harm to other living things, especially adorable polar bears.

Which brings me to my next thought.... How much energy has been consumed with this GothicManor thread by encouraging people to use their computers and accesories during daytime peak energy usage times? How many polar bears will be killed by this thread started by GothicManor, and how much energy is saved by shutting off your computer for one year and reading some books instead?

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

You know what else is happening in Anaheim tonight? The Angels season opener against the Padres at Anaheim Stadium. The game starts at 6:05 PM, so around 8:00 PM they'll be in the fifth or sixth inning or so and the tens of thousands of watts of lighting around the entire stadium complex will be visible from space.

Up the road a bit, the Dodgers are playing the RedSox at 7:10pm at the Coliseum. Baseball in the dark might be fun, but 115,000 fans might not like it.

It's pretty obvious that it's happening, I don't understand people who chose to ignore it. Maybe they want cheaper beach front property??

You do realize that every year, the temperature average has gotten colder and colder. How on earth can global warming take place if that is the fact. I think global warming is just a political tool.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

Global warming is a fact, the average temperature is rising year to year. The debate is over how much man (and woman) is contributing to this rise and whether we can do anything to stop it, or whether that is even desirable.

As for Disneyland, it's already dark there at night, please do not dim the lights any further.
That said, I won't be participating tonight, this kind of PR stunt is just silly IMO.

You do realize your facts are completely wrong. But alas, that is for another thread.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

No vote. I'll be away from home anyway so everything will be dark. I use only one light at a time anyway, and they're CFL bulbs which I've been using since 2000.

Global warming aside, the more immediate concern here seems to be pollution from generating electricity. If you want to worry about pollution you should look at all the cars on the roads first, and the gluttony that goes on there.

For electricity most energy goes into lighting. I'd advocate using CFL bulbs (and encouraging domestic production of them instead of importing) and avoiding appliances and electronics with "standby mode" instead of "off". (Few things truly need "standby mode" especially with modern technology. Only those things that need to function at all times such as Tivos and answering machines.)

As far as Disney goes, they're high-profile and in a position where they could set a good example of intelligent energy usage and "green" practices in general, both in and away from the parks. It's just just a matter of their prioritizing it. Not necessarily by showing off by going dark for an hour, but advocating all the time, maybe like the Disney Institute has taught about business management and things.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

Just a note... the poll is bias in its choices. No, Disneyland should not dim their lights for earth hour. It would be against policy to show favoritism to one cause vs. another, especially on a political topic such as global warming, cant give rise to partiality. Besides it would be a safety hazard and a huge inconvinience to guests who have no opinion towards the topic

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

I'm sure they want it at night to make a point, but if it was a daylight hour I'd gladly turn off all lights, TV, computer, etc and read a book or use my cell for an hour.. but aitting in the dark I won't do.

To stay ON TOPIC I don't think Disneyland should either. It'll only reult in a bunch of people complaining.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

Completely random thought, but since fossil fuel was most likely used to produce the electricity (most of the U.S. is fossil fuel fed sorry) and since electricity in the general sense is not stored... aren't we technically wasting energy by not using it and also creating an unexpected dip in one grid which would thereby have to cause a surge in another... just saying!

Other then that I can see this thread going into Gold as more and more weigh in on "Is Global Warming Real?" and "Are humans causing it or is it natural?" Considering the amount of data currently available I agree with the first question and would answer yes. There is enough data within the geologic timeline to conclusively prove the temperature has increased, and there have been increases in the past as well. However since we have only been "making smoke" on a global scale for the past 100 years (Europe and other industrial nations that developed earlier would be slightly longer) I would say the data on "Did we do it or is it natural?" is inconclusive. Personal opinion, and this is only opinion, I don't think we helped the situation. But in honesty there is not enough data mainly because we have not done this globally for a prolonged period of time. Unlike temperature and climate changes, which were recorded before we industrialized, "Did we do it?" includes the word "we" and "we" haven't been industrialized globally long enough to honestly know.
