Is there any information available for the last 13 years? The data here seems to stop around 1995.
Look at the average minimum temperature. It went from 22.5 to almost 30 in less than a century. There are always going to be dips. But, as DisneyAnalyst previously stated, the general direction is up. Let me dig some more and I'll find some better numbers for Anchorage and other arctic places (where it's already hitting the fan!).

I agree with many members in this thread about the poll being bias. So, if I don't conform to your standards, I'm either a polar bear hater or a C02 lover? And, if I agree with you, I'm the best thing on Earth.

Although I agree we should reduce as a whole the pollution problem on Earth, the fact is that one hour isn't really going to change anything as it currently stands. It would be a far, far better thing to do if we all, as I'm doing already, to try and conserve EACH and EVERY single day and to find ways to stop our polluting methods.

As for the intent of this biased thread, I fully support that Disney keeps lighting as is. It's already pretty dark there at night - have you seen the trail behind Thunder at night?

The point was not to lower energy consumption in that hour. The point was to draw attention to the CRISIS that is happening in our world and the things that are causing it (like overconsumption).

The problem with this philosophy is that the more time you spend trying to draw attention to a "crisis" the less time you spend actually trying to solve the "crisis". People that conserve daily, walk and bike to work and school are doing more to help the planet than a million Al Gore's and eco-celebrities. The latter talk while the former do.

Talking about overconsumption, George Bush is much more eco-friendly than Al Gore.

Doing it on a personal level is nothing when your administration blocks the kind of massive environmental reform that will help to curb greenhouse gas emissions! Of course, I'm talking about the waiver that California requested from the EPA to impose stricter environmental standards. That waiver was denied and the EPA and the Bush Administration are under investigation for this illogical decision. This was just the latest of many crimes against the environment that Bush cannot wipe his hands clean of with good personal stewardship. I think we've "polluted" the Disneyland Resort forum enough with this kind of talk. This discussion should be had elsewhere!

Some of the ice is above/below sea level, in those cases the ice melting would not have much of an effect. In other cases the ice is supported by the shelf, and is not evenly distributed in the water, when that ice melts the levels will rise. The worst ones are the land based shelves which have been completely removed from the water, in that case you are physically adding ice to water and it will cause an increase. The other issue is that any loss of ice is a loss of reflective surface causing the surrounding ice to be more susceptible to a melt.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

We had a power failure this winter that lasted 6 days... I think I've covered my bit, in addition all our lighting is provided by fluorescent bulbs, our home is less than 1,100 sq feet for 6 people, we only have one bath, we limit our showers to less than 10 minutes each (try that with teenage daughters!) we collect rain water in rain barrels to water our plants... we grow our own vegetables, and I drive a VW as my daily driver.

And by the way, I'm one of those wakko's that remembers when we were scared of the coming Ice Age, when it snowed in Miami, and this winter has been the coldest in our neck of the woods in over 25 years.

I forgot to mention that we keep our thermostat set to 60 degrees year round. It's our part of trying to be good stewards.

Re: Should Disneyland Resort Reduce lighting for Earth Hour tonight?

Coming into this thread a bit late... I apologize for anything rehashed in this post...

The actual turning off of the lights for an hour isn't really going to do much but give un-needed headaches to the grid and it's workers. However, the symbolism of it is a good thing I think, if it educates people and stimulates a wider knowledge and increased awareness of the need to take better care. That's where the true benefit of this lies, in calling attention to the situation.

I'm really big on "if you leave the room, turn it off" with pretty much everyone I know including friends. I really don't care if they do it for the selfish reason of saving themselves a buck as long as they do it.

As for the ice...
Arctic sea ice isn't the problem at all. Ice floats because it is less dense than water. Water is actually most dense at 4 degrees C. If arctic sea-ice sheets melt, the volume of water that would be released is actually LESS than the volume of the ice that melted. So if the entire arctic melted, the oceans would actually drop a little bit. This is why if you fill a glass with water and put it in the freezer, as it freezes it overflows.

The real problem is ice that is on land... i.e. Greenland, Antarctica, etc. That is a LOT of ice that is VERY thick that isn't floating in the water. When it melts, and melting it is, it will be adding water to the oceans.

You know what might work better? Tripling energy prices. That might get people to think twice about that "energy saving" Plasma TV. (Hint: it doesn't save energy. It actually uses it pretty well.)

Did Vegas dim the strip for 60 minutes? I doubt it.

It's good to be aware, take steps. Reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible!
