Exclamation Dog may have eaten a staple

Good grief, I don't know what to do! Mandy decided to rip up some of my papers today while I was at work. One of the papers has a corner missing of it, and I know there was a staple in that corner. I didn't see that corner and staple lying on the ground anywhere, so I figure she must have eaten it! I wasn't worried at first, since it was a closed staple and she was acting fine. But now I've read online about how objects like staples can kill dogs and I'm freaking out. My vet is closed, they have an emergency vet but I'm not sure if this is an emergency since she's acting just fine and I can't talk straight anyway right now. I've heard of feeding dogs cotton balls when they've eaten sharp objects, but is that really safe for them?

hmmm....off the top of my head....if she ate it and it stayed closed, (which is a possibility since you can't find the papers it was attached to.) then, I would think she is okay. A closed staple should pass fairly easy. I would think the only problem is if it got opened somehow. Then, the sharp edges MIGHT hurt her. I say, keep an eye on her. If you see her acting strange, or in any kind of discomfort...then, take her somewhere.

Not sure what to do either, but why not call the emergency vet or animal clinic that is open and get some advice?

Put 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in milk and let her drink it. She should yack. If not do it again 20 minutes later.

Dogs eat bones and things everyday. Their stomachs aren't balloon-esque. I'm sure she'll be fine.
But keep a close eye on her!

Would it even still be in her stomach? She could have eaten it anytime from 7:30 this morning to 5:30 this evening.

Crud. I don't know. Go search poo. I just know that hydrogen peroxide thing because it saved my tushy once (dog decided to eat my unders). When I used it, I was within an hour of it happening. Less than that probably. Yacked those up right away and then gave me the "poor puppy eyes" for the rest of the night.

    Hope she's okay.

And I can't imagine it got opened. The staple was connecting a small receipt to the larger paper, and the entire receipt is gone! So I figure she must have eaten the entire thing!

She's just napping as usual right now, I think I'll just keep an eye on her for now. Thanks for all your responses, it's nice not having to go through this alone!

yikes, that sounds scary. I am a total worry wart when it comes to that kind of stuff. You're probably doing the right thing by taking the "wait and see" approach because lord knows I've run into the emergency animal clinic, were they sent me back home telling me to keep an eye on my dogs in the event anything happens and always manage to leave me with a nice little bill stopping by.

Ah yes, I am familiar with those bills, LOL.

This is starting to be some weird pattern with her. I've always left papers on the floor, and she hasn't gone after them since she was a puppy. Now, she'll rip up some papers, go a month without bothering anything, rips up some more papers, go more time leaving them alone, etc. It's so weird!
