Are you superstitious??

I heard a lot of superstitions growing up:

Knock on wood to avoid bad luck.
Do not walk under a ladder.
Friday the 13th
7 years bad luck if you break a mirror
If you spill some salt, take some and throw it over your left shoulder.
Find a penny and pick it up. All the day you'll have good luck.
Step on a crack, break your mama's back.
Don't cross a black cats path.

What have you heard, or what do you believe?

I always do the "knock on wood", penny pick up and tossing salt over my shoulder.

I was a teenager.
I had a sister.
I had two brothers
We never had a pets.
We finally got a dog.
It needed a name.
I named it Lucky.
It loved my sister the best.
She walked the dog at night.
The dog was very small.
I was not home.
It was a Friday.
The date was the 13th.
The dog got excited.
It saw my sister.
It ran in the street.
The taxi cab, it could not stop.
It hit the dog.
I did not know.
I was not home.
I went in the house.
There were tears.
Lucky was dead.
Hit by a car.
On Friday the 13th.

Moral of this story - perhaps - don't name your dog Lucky - or make sure you stay under the covers on Friday the 13th.

I love cataloging superstitions! I don't follow any of them, but I find them fascinating.

I don't walk under ladders because I don't want things to fall on me, not due to superstition. I have a black cat as a companion, so for me I think they're lucky!

My dad had this thing about if you left the house and had to go back in because you forgot something, you had to take your feet off the floor. I never understood why he did it. I used to think it was dumb.....guess who takes her feet off the floor now a days????

My friend Sara's mother is from Scotland, and she instilled in me that you never EVER hand a sharp object hand to hand to someone. You have to set it down and let them pick it up, otherwise you will have an argument with that person. Funny, huh? Doesn't matter if it's scissors, pins, nails, etc. Just no sharp objects at all.

My wierd one is about fortunes from Chinese Fortune cookies - I believe it's bad luck to throw them away so I don't.

I also pick my feet up when I cross railroad tracks.

As for the penny thing I heard it was heads up = good luck, tails up = bad luck.

Most of the common ones I'm aware of involve theatrical superstitions like not saying the name of that Scottish play, starts with an M, while in the theatre unless it's an actual production of said play. What's sad is that there are those who stronlgy believe these things, those that don't, and those that really don't care either way. Sometimes very immature people (usually young and stupid) will purposely engage in certain acts just to freak out and upset the superstitious folks, and that is just rude in my opinion.

The black cat theory is so fake. I have lived with black cats for the past 10+ years and love them with all of my heart. Unfortunately, Black cats do not get adopted out of high kill shelters in this area because of this superstition and they get put to sleep. So a few month ago, I did my job and adopted myself a beutiful black kitten. Do not believe anything about cats being bad luck. The media just uses them as if they are.

Black cats are awesome! as a teen I specifically chose the black kitten as mine when our family cat had a litter. I was reading Anne Rice at the time so I named him Lestat. He just dissapeered one day. not sure if something happenned to him and my family just didn't tell me about it or if he got picked up by someone while out wandering.

About an hour before I adopted my black cat from the shelter, I saw his image on the shelters website. Right when I saw his image, I knew that I wanted him. So right when I walked through the shelters doors, I went right up to him and adopted him and love him so darn much. His name is semore because he likes to see every thing that is going on and he is very curious.
