Western Australia

I'm travelling there this July. I'll be there for a month.

So I'm calling on the well travelled MiceChatters out there and some of our Aussie members to help me out.

What do I have to see in Perth and the area around it? I won't be able to make it out east this trip, but I'm heading back next January to visit Sydney and Melbourne and stuff.

Please help, I've met very few people who've travelled to this remote region of the world so getting feedback of what to do has been difficult haha.

Re: Western Australia

I'm here!!!!

http://www.westernaustralia.com/au/P...Australia.aspx

I haven't been to WA, but mr tassie's brother lives there. the capital and largest town is Perth, which is situated on the indian ocean.
Australia is about the same size as the USA, and WA is almost HALF of the country, so it is a HUGE state.

map here...
http://www.ozhorizons.com.au/wa/map.gif

some great things to do there is to go to monkey mia, where the wild dolphins come into shore to be fed by the tourists

http://www.monkeymia.com.au/site/

go to fremantle, where they held the america's cup after we won it in the 80s

http://www.fremantlewa.com.au/

the margaret river area, which is a wine region

http://www.margaretriver.com/pages.asp?code=500

rottnest island, where they have these small creatures calles a quokka

http://www.westernaustralia.com/en/D...st_Island.aspx

albany (mr tassie's niece lives here) and is a former whaling town (where they used to kill them waaaay back in the early 1900s
http://www.myalbany.net/
http://www.whaleworld.org/About_Whal...aling_History/

and then there's Broome! I would LOVE to go to broome. it's waaaaaaay up north where the temp in july (winter here) will be in the 90s!!

http://www.broomevisitorcentre.com.au/

it's where they have the most pearls in australia, and used to have the japanese men dive for pearls.
it's really tropical and supposed to be absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Cable beach is supposed to be awesome. they even have camels on the beach. Just a bit of trivia, but Australia has the biggest population of camels (wild) in the WORLD

you can also swim with those HUGE whales sharks in broome, and i think july is the right time to see them

then there's geraldton

http://www.geraldtontourist.com.au/

and exmouth

http://www.exmouthwa.com.au/

and esperance, which is way down the bottom of australia

http://www.visitesperance.com/

hope at least some of this helps!!! If you want anymore info, just ask, or even if you'd like me to pick up some WA travel guides, please PM me!!!

Re: Western Australia

Wow thanks Tassie!

Broome looks fantastic! I'll be staying with my gf in Perth, but she hasn't been helpful. I've just mentioned all these things to her and she's like "Oh yeah! We could do that!"

We're doing a couple nights at Rottnest (or Rotto as they call it there) and apparently be doing frequent trips to Fremantle.

But I had no idea there was so much to see outside of Perth; Geraldton and Albany look really great.

But Broome has become a 'must see' for me now haha, I'm talking to her now and she's saying "It'll take like 2 daysss to drive there, you're covering petrol". Thanks so much Tassie!

Re: Western Australia

you're more than welcome!!
i forgot to mention the inland areas, like kalgoorlie, which is a huge mining area and gold mining area

http://www.kalgoorlietourism.com/

according to this

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic...Australia.html

it's about 1500 miles from perth to broome.
this chart gives you an idea, but it's in kms. you just need to look up a km to miles convertor.

Gina, I wish you guys could come over here!!!! I miss you!

Actually miles mean nothing to me metric for the win! ^^

Kalgoorlie looks really cool too, I'd love to see the outback. I've already said that I plan to ride in a kangaroos pouch (yes I know its not possible, but I can still dream about it)

Re: Western Australia

there was a travel program on TV yesterday and they went to a place called Quobba Station. it's close to carnarvon. It's right on the ocean and has cabins and tent/cabins.
The ocean has a very deep drop off close to shore, so the whales come in really close and play. Also the marlin and kingfish are so close to shore that you can catch them from the cliff, without going out on a boat. it looks beautiful!!!

Re: Western Australia

another thing on that program was Toodyay, which is only 90 minutes from perth. There you can see what the outback is like and also go to "boshack" where they take you around the area and teach about bushtucker

http://boshackoutback.com/

Bush Tucker in the Outback Try some of our special Bush Food. Delicacies like Kangaroo, Emu & Crocodile with a selection of bush chutneys, sauces, jams and damper (bush bread) for you to experience the real taste of Australian Bush products

we've been looking for something like this. One thing I was really intent on doing was seeing the outback (and trying kangaroo ^^). This looks awesome, you're making me so excited for this trip Tassie haha. My girlfriend is getting overwhelmed with all the things I'm telling her we have to do now haha.

Thank you so much ^^

Re: Western Australia

so is your girlfriend an Australian??? or just over here??

If you ever get to MY side, I'll have to show you around. I grew up about 2 hours from Sydney (and my parents grew up in sydney, so I spent all the school vacation with grandparents in sydney) and now live about an hour from Brisbane.

You know what?? Both my brothers worked on the Alaskan pipeline in the 70s and lived in Ft McMurray!! One is now in sydney, the other in Co
