American Airlines to charge for 1st checked bag

I knew this was coming. American Airlines will start charging $15.00 for the first checked bag as well as raise other fees.

Even more sad, they are going to lay off some of their employees.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ American Airlines, the largest U.S. carrier, will start charging $15 (euro9.52) for the first checked bag, cut domestic flights and lay off workers as it grapples with record-high fuel prices.
But rival Delta does not plan to match American's fee for the first checked bag, a spokeswoman said.
American said Wednesday the fee for the first checked bag starts June 15 and that it would raise other fees for services ranging from reservation help to oversized bags. The other fees will mostly range from $5 (euro3.17) to $50 (euro31.74) per service, the airline said.
Last month American announced it would join other carriers in charging $25 (euro15.87) for second bags checked for some passengers, but it wasn't immediately clear how Wednesday's announcement would affect that.
Its proposed fee for a first checked bag would exempt people who belong to elite levels of its frequent flyer programs, those paying full-fare tickets and those traveling overseas.
The planned fee on the first checked bag immediately ran into resistance. Delta Air Lines Inc. spokeswoman Betsy Talton said the Atlanta-based airline is considering all of its options in light of $130-a-barrel oil, but doesn't plan to match the $15 fee American announced.
American plans to cut domestic flight capacity by 11 percent to 12 percent in the fourth quarter. American had previously expected fourth-quarter capacity to fall 4.6 percent from the same period in 2007.
Parent AMR Corp. said reduced flying will lead to an undisclosed number of job cuts at both American and its American Eagle subsidiary.
AMR expects to retire 45 to 50 planes from its fleet, most of them gas-guzzling MD-80 aircraft. Those were the plane grounded for faulty wiring last month.
American said rising oil prices have increased its expected annual fuel costs by nearly $3 billion (euro1.9 billion) since the start of the year.
AMR shares tumbled $1.23, or 15 percent, to $6.97 after the announcement which came as its shareholders gathered for their annual meeting.

Re: American Airlines to charge for 1st checked bag

The way we travel is completely changing daily. Low fare carriers virtually don't exist anymore. jetBlue, Southwest, they really aren't low fare per-se as I can find fares on other major carriers that are within dollars of each other, sometimes cheaper on say, United! We should change what we call them from low fare to economy only (since most don't offer first class).

But I digress. There's going to come a point when we're gonna be charged for things we would have never thought we'd be charged for. Aisle seats might cost more than middle seats. Want to board early? $10 please. Care for a Coke? That'll be $2. The glory days of flying are widdling down to basically the same as bus travel, which is sad.

HOWEVER (and I've said this before), comparing todays fares with say, 20 years ago, they haven't changed much at all. Airlines haven't been keeping up with the economy in charging more. So a transcon fare that cost $300 in 1985, in some instances costs less than $300 today. In real terms, that fare should probably be closer to $600-$700 in todays world. Eventually this needed to change, you can't run a business charging fares that were the standard over 20 years ago.

I agree with O'nut, but I think it would have been easier to swallow if they had just raised their fares $15. It probably wouldn't have even been noticed.

That doesn't help the businessman who just brings a carry on. I think it's fair. The way the airline industry is they have to do something or go belly up. I'd rather groan about $15 a bag rather then have the government run the industry.

Re: American Airlines to charge for 1st checked bag

With gas prices so high and a career field left in shambles since 9-11, I am not surprised one bit. Plus, from what I heard, there seems to be not as many travelers this year as compared to the past. They need to keep making money to prevent going bankrupt somehow.

Soon, other airline carriers will do the same I bet.

You think quite well. I just prefer this to an across the board rate increase. The PC mobs won't allow them to charge extra for heavy people taking 2 seats so they have to nickel and dime us elsewhere.

This just means that more people will be carrying on their luggage. It's going to take twice as long to load the plane and find places for everybody's carry-ons.

Re: American Airlines to charge for 1st checked bag

This summer will be the first time I will have flown since 1996. Partly because I never had anywhere I had to fly to, partly because it cost so much to fly.

But my daughter is now in Nor Cal, and I sat down and figured that with the price of gas, and my car's consumption I could fly for almost what it would cost me to drive up and back. (Plus getting there in a few hours as opposed to two days one way.) I'll be flying up on Delta, and they haven't started charging for the first bag, but even before this I was seriously considering just mailing some of my clothes to her place ahead of time, and in my single carry on back pack take my important stuff... undies, camera, meds etc. I can travel pretty light (she's got a washer and dryer), and for $15 I can mail a pretty good size package to her. I know the airlines are in pretty bad shape, and I think its going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Besides.... I think I trust the postal service more than I trust the airlines with my stuff.

Even the Amtrak bus system is looking better all the time.

Re: American Airlines to charge for 1st checked bag

these ideas are stupid and simply going to come back to haunt them. The more you hassel your guests, the less likely they are going to return.

Fliers have airlines they simply won't use - even if they are the cheapest. Tactics like these are the perfect way to earn your way onto those lists.

Have you ever tried paying for something at the check-in counter? It's typically a total MESS. Now you want to make virtually EVERY customer have to do a transaction at check-in? That is going to MURDER the check-in counters.

This is purely a shell game. They'd be so much better off just raising their ticket prices. This shuffling around simply tries to hide the fact they are charging more and its going to kill your customer satisfaction when check-in becomes miserable, and people who are not familiar with the policy get blindsided.

Lets not forget the weight restrictions they've tightened on bags first.. now they start charging for second bags.. now they charge for any bag.

    These moves are customer suicide.

O-nut some airlines are already charging for aisle and window seats. Last night I heard that SWA will probably stop giving out peanuts on the plane. Here's an article of what fees are being charged by what airlines.

I was upset that they are now charging for skycap! Unless you check in online. I almost feel bad for the sky caps, because now they aren't going to get tips. I used to always use it, now I won't just on principle.

yep...everyone will be bringing extra large bags as carry ons. I know there's supposed to be a size limit....but, please! I've seen people bring body bags (size wise) on the plane and stow it!
