    August Moon

The full "August Moon" is tonight.

The Full Red Moon of August was always one of my favorite phenomenon as a child. My grandmother would have my sister and I stay over at her house for the August Moon Tea Party. We would lounge under the stars for hours sipping tea as the red moon rose higher and higher into the night sky.

I'm not sure why this moon of all the others often appears red, but it sure is a magic memory.

    Re: August Moon

Thats funny because the full moons of August and September are the most memorable for me too from my childhood. It always reminded me of the impending beginning of school, my birthday, autumn. I was sitting on my patio last night at 8pm and just watching the moon rise, it was so awesome and stunning.

Like Stevie Wonder once sang, "the harvest moon to light one tender August night".

I love full moons. We have a fairly substantial mountain about 2 miles from my house which we always try to hike on by the light of a full moon. Happy memories.
Dusty, glad you've got such a good one!

    I'll look for it.
Why August? I have only one idea: Each month's full moon rises at a different spot on the horizon, about 180 degrees opposite the sun's setting point for the day.

It's said to be the brightest full moon, so it's possible that the brightness causes it to be redder upon rising.

    I KNOW, I KNOW !!!!!

The refracted rays of sunlight doing the illuminating turn the moon a strange reddish. Or copper. Maybe rust. That’s because of all the bouncing around those rays had to go through on their way through the atmosphere. The more atmosphere that sunlight travels through, the more the blue and green parts of the spectrum are scattered. That’s why sunrises and sunsets are yellow and pink and red. The low early or late sun, hitting the atmosphere at a shallow angle, has to fight through more atmospheric particles on its way to your eye, and the reddish wavelengths get through better

    • Full Sturgeon Moon - August The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

    From AOL Research:

Native American tribes named this moon "Red" because as it rises, it appears reddish through the haze. Fishing tribes also named it "The Sturgeon Moon," a tribute to the large fish of the Great Lakes who were readily caught during this time.
Because I love you all, here are some of the other common names for the full moons in each month:

January: Old Moon, or Moon After Yule
February: Snow Moon, Hunger Moon, or Wolf Moon
March: Sap Moon, Crow Moon or Lenten Moon
April: Grass Moon, or Egg Moon
May: Planting Moon, or Milk Moon
June: Rose Moon, Flower Moon, or Strawberry Moon
July: Thunder Moon, or Hay Moon
August: Green Corn Moon, or Grain Moon
September :Fruit Moon, or Harvest Moon
October: Harvest Moon, or Hunter's Moon
November: Hunter's Moon, Frosty Moon, or Beaver Moon
December: Moon Before Yule, or Long Night Moon

Whoever could you be talking about sweetie? By the way, I've always been partial to September's "Fruit Moon".

    Re: August Moon

I swear! I know Blue Moon - which, you know how often that happens........

and Harvest Moon, because, you know, it's like in California, we know that, like soon, we'll have to harvest our sweaters out of moth balls and wear them for a little while. Isn't that COOL! That's what a harvest moon is. Oh, and it's big.

Very cool. I guess I never thought about the origins of the play "Teahouse of the August Moon" before, but now it makes sense.
