Google Maps - check out the street views!

    http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Click on the tab on the map marked "Street View". Wherever you see a camera on the map, and the streets have a blue highlight, is the area where there are street views.

It's funny how there are big cities, and small cities, and some big cities not at all. Heck, even the one for Lincoln, NE has oodles of street views of farmland! But can ya see Seattle? Or Washington DC? Nope. Not yet anyway.

I can tell the one for my house was taken sometime last summer, around July/August.

Is your house there? I've been fascinated with this feature for a week. And it seems every other day it's updated with new photos. Just today I saw a friend in Bakersfields home

It's not there because they figured the next flood will wipe it out, so they didn't want to waste time obtaining the photos.

I could look at this for hours. A whole new way to waste what's left of my life, but there is an undeniable appeal to looking at one's childhood homes, schools, favorite haunts. I was getting all misty as I "drove" down the street that my late Mom and Step-Dad bought right after they got married. Sadly, somebody was getting a washer delivered the day the photo guys drove by. The large truck pretty much obliterates that home, but the washer is a snazzy dark red.

The realization that all that info is out there is also just a bit creepy.

I just checked out our new address.

My house and most of if not all of Boston is done, but my home town about 40 minutes away is not yet. I can tell it was done sometime last July or August as well but more specifically on a weekend in the early morning due to which cars are parked on street and the angle of the sun. Pretty neat how they did this.

I love doing this. It's so fun! Not nearly enough of the places that I have lived, though. It is a bit unsettling, too, even though my house isn't on there yet.

I saw one of the cars driving around recently with a bajillion cameras mounted to it. I counted. I thought it was really cool to see, though.

Re: Google Maps - check out the street views!

Everytime I've done it (which is a lot, see below) in Portland and surrounding areas, they are right on. How did they do that? Esp. with the 360 degree views? I'm so intrigued by it.

When they shot our house, it was being built last summer, which is kinda cool.

Once when I was getting directions to a house nearby (this area isn't plotted grid-like, it's all twisty and there are four streets with the same name), there was a picture of my friend's daughter walking down the street, which was a little creepy. We got to the party, got a little buzzed, told everyone about it and we all got online and googled our houses, friend's houses, businesses, because we were so creeped out by it. It was fun.

It was really helpful when we were going out in the boonies to pick up our new dog from a shelter. I'd already seen the 360 degree view of the entire block, so when we were nearby, I knew that we were right there.

Yea, I've noticed if you put in an address, it's not 100% accurate, which I'm guessing is a security issue. Like I typed in a friends house in Fullerton to see what it looked like, and had to "drive" about 4 houses away, but I found it. Her car was in the driveway so I'm guessing she was home.

And I was so excited when I found it. Like a little kid. My reaction - <audible excited noise> "I found it, awwww, what a cute house!"

Re: Google Maps - check out the street views!

I found my house and seeing that the van is the only vehicle parked tells me that the picture was most likely taken after 1:45 in the afternoon Mon-Thur.

P.S. My address is listed wrong but it still found my house.
