    Why Disney's Sleeping Beauty Rocks

Since the Sleeping Beauty Castle walk-through at Disneyland re-opened, I've been in the mood to watch the film by which the attraction was inspired. I finally watched it, tonight, and I'd like to take this virtual space in the universe to talk about how great and complex the film really is. Please feel free to rant about your favorite moment, character, theme, trivia or whatever. If you don't like the movie or any aspect of it, feel free to point that out as well. I'm sure we can get some great discussions going.
I'll start by talking about the three good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. After watching the film tonight, I really appreciated how the driving force of the film are three middle-aged ladies. My favorite fairy: Fauna (the green one). I love that she's the repressed one of the bunch! She gives Aurora the gift of song, and I can picture her singing to and along with Briar Rose as she grows up. I bet, when no one is looking, she's belting out songs left and right! Also, I love how her dream of making a birthday cake for Briar Rose finally comes true. "She's always wanted to make one," Flora tells Merryweather. "And now's her last chance."* Fauna's ambition of baking a cake has simmered deep inside of her for sixteen years, and when her time has come she's overcome! "I'm going to make it FIFTEEN LAYERS HIGH! WITH..."*
    Fauna's awesome.

*I'm pretty sure I'm paraphrasing the dialog.
    Oo-de-lally!

my favorite part is when maleficent has the prince and she's telling him how he will leave old to go to the princess. Mailficent is by far my favorite villain.

as far as the role of Aurora. I don't like it at all. I do agree the fairies add a lot to the movie.

Fauna was always my favorite, because she was green. That was my favorite color when I was young.

But, now that you brought it up, what do you think were the duties of each of the fairies for those 16 years?

Fauna clearly didn't cook. Flora never made outfits...

I believe Merryweather sewed. Fauna took care of the baby. Flora must have cooked. When Rose was old enough, she washed.

The fairies used to scare me when I was younger. I would have nightmares about them frequently.

I think Merryweather was probably in charge of all the cooking and the cleaning. I agree that Fauna probably had the largest chunk of raising Briar Rose, though I'm sure they all took part in that. Flora I think just bossed everyone around, but I'm sure in a good way. I was thinking about it tonight, and I bet Flora designed their cottage. It was probably the last bit of magic she did before they put their wands away. I was looking at the detail of the cottage, and anywhere there was wood (shutters, doors, paneling), there was fairy-like carving. In Maleficent's castle, the carving was all skulls along the stone walls.

Well, if you will recall, the cottage was an abandoned woodcutter's cottage. So, most of the detail was probably there before the fairies moved in. I always thought Flora went cold turkey with all of the other fairies before they told the king and queen about their plan.

    No, Ray... just ridiculous.

Ah, I missed that detail. I'll just have to watch it again (but I'll wait a little while).

My sister had the album/book of Sleeping Beauty when we were little. I remember being terrified of the crow and sitting on the floor crying with my hand over the picture of it, afraid to move. I was 3.

There were some pretty awesome pictures in all of those album/book combos.

Forget all this stuff about wanting a pink or blue dress. I want to see a dress like the one in the last dance that changes from pink to blue over and over again. That would be the coolest dress ever. I wonder what shoes my wife would wear with that dress.

Well, the classy thing would probably get gold shoes to match the crown... but the fun thing to do would be to get a pair of those clear platform heels that have the multi-changing LED lights in the bottom! That way, she matches no matter what!

And her shoes should turn blue when her gown is pink, and vice versa.
