Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

    A Prince of a Preview

09.13.09 -Disney has done it again! With its triumphant return to hand-drawn animation, The Princess and the Frog is sure to become Disney's next classic film. And judging by the reaction to the sneak preview panel on day three of the D23 Expo, fans will definitely be lining up at theaters around the country to catch this film on opening day this November.

On board for the jam-packed presentation were all-star artists and animators Mike Gabriel, Ian Gooding, Andreas Deja, Eric Goldberg, Bruce Smith and Michael Surrey, as well as co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker, story supervisor Don Hall, writer Rob Edwards and storyboard artist Josie Trinidad. After starting off the event by showing a musical number from the movie, "Friends on the Other Side," the crew spent the next hour and a half, spilling their movie-making secrets telling the story of how the simple tale of a princess and a frog came to fruition.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

From Disney Legend Floyd Norman's blog:

    colorful princess

    September 17, 2009

When I was a kid growing up in Santa Barbara, a friend was nice enough to let me “sneak in” the back door of the Granada Theater. The old guy who worked there knew I wanted to be a Disney artist when I grew up. Walt Disney’s “Cinderella” had just begun its theatrical run, and it was destined to be a hit. I sat through two screenings of the Disney classic that day.

Things have changed since 1950 when a young blonde Cinderella had to schlep trays of food for her wicked stepmother. Now, there’s a new girl in town, and she’s got a handful of trays as well. Let’s just hope her fortunes are as bright as her blonde, blue-eyed counterpart.

It’s 1920’s New Orleans, and I love this image from the new Disney motion picture. I almost feel I know the people in this shot. The woman in purple reminds me of my mom. That’s the way I remember her when she was a young woman full of youthful enthusiasm. My mom’s gone now, but in a way she’s still here. My young granddaughter, Evelyn carries on her name.

No doubt Evelyn will be delighted when I take her to see Disney’s “Princess and the Frog” this fall. For all the racial politics, she probably won’t even notice that Princess Tiana shares her skin color. And, in my opinion that’s exactly the way it should be.

ALIASd, have you seen any posts of MCers from the expo? I was trying to get into the panel to see what had changed since the screening we attended in May, and the line DID. NOT. MOVE. I heard they played most of the songs and I was wondering what others thought of them. Maybe they are as good as Randy Newman can do them. IMHO, they need to give They Might Be Giants a shot at scoring one of these. They're already on the payroll for the Disney Channel and they rocked the Dr. Evil song from Austin Powers.

Hey, not sure which scenes you're refering too. Here's some notes from Cartoon Brew's Jerry Beck on the latest presentation though.

Be sure to read the comments for this, it's filled with credit details, etc. from the WDAS animators that worked (& are working on the film at this writing).

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

I was at WDAS this evening for an event and took some random shots of some of 'The Princess and the Frog' artwork around the building ( & a few other things too) - enjoy!

First the famous corridor leading to the lobby

Mama Odie by supervising animator Andreas Deja

Tiana by supervising animator Mark Henn

Dr. Facillier looms over the lobby entrance

This gorgeous piece is at the bottom of the staircase

Tiana down the hall from Effects & Lighting

    Across from the conference room

Looked like some storyboards for 'Rapunzel' in there...

Cutest ladies room attendent ever, "Baby Mine"!

The Princess and the Frog bid you good evening on your way out

Legendary Disney animator Glen Keane escorting his family over to the event (really. He walked out when I did to go meet them in the lot. It was so fabulous chatting with him about painting & drawing especially over wine!)

A slightly different view of WDAS from the west, in the shade of the ABC building

The villain is suppose to be charming like Oogie Boogie and not scary. If anything, I think this villian is the most focused from what has been revealed about him. His motive to turn the prince into a frog hasn't been revealed yet, but I'm sure it will make sense in the film.

Besides, I'm looking forward to hearing Keith David sing.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Don't forget that some of us have seen the first 30 minutes of the film. One of the things in that time frame was a song for Dr. Facilier. He certainly had enough screentime to base judgements on something other than his static appearance.

So I just got a copy of the Princess and the Frog Little Golden Book, that I illustrated. It printed out a bit darker but I'm happy with it overall. It will be available in October!!!
