    D23 + Annie Leibovitz

    Fri, 06 March 2009 at 11:19 pm

Zac Efron gently kisses the porcelain cheek of real-life girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens as they re-enact Prince Philip and Princess Aurora’s true love kiss in Sleeping Beauty.

The High School Musical sweethearts were snapped by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, as re-posted on Stitch Kingdom.

The re-enactment photo will be published in Disney twenty-three magazine.

The official website will launch in three days at Disney.com/D23.

Three movies and a half dozen semi-nude photos later, and Disney still won't let them kiss.

^ Um they kissed in HSM2 and HSM3. I love Annie Leibovitz's work, but I don't think Vanessa makes a good Sleeping Beauty

Shouldn't her eyes be closed? And the lace that Zac is wearing is odd...

They don't even look the same. I had to do a double-take when I read that it was Zac and Vanessa.

I'm also a big fan of Annie Leibovitz's previous work, but this one was weak. Zac looks fine. Vanessa, on the other hand, doesn't do Sleeping Beauty the justice that she deserves. Vanessa is positioned in such a weird, unnatural way. It just looks awkward. Perhaps, Vanessa should have closed his eyes, and Zac should have left his eyes open. I don't know. I just know that it doesn't look as visually appealing as her others.

It amazes me that apparently so many need or expect a human duplicates of the film's characters to feel they're seeing 'Sleeping Beauty' depicted. Why copy, or attempt to, a true classic? Especially animated characters! A mall photo studio would've probably gone that way with the shot, thankfully Leibovitz relied on her artist's eye thats delivered so many memorable images and surprises in the decades past.

Choosing a shot (and there were probably hundreds shot on that day) with her Sleeping Beauty's eyes open, engaging the viewer and drawing you into the scene is a terrific choice. Her Prince Phillip here (as opposed to the other one portrayed by David Beckham on horseback) appears lost in reverie, deep in his own dream, soon to be realized one would believe. The full photo is beautifully composed and suitably ethereal. They look lovely.

I don't like it either. At first glance, you have no clue who they are supposed to be, and even Disney prince and princess it takes a few minutes to guess at it. In all of her other pictures, you can tell on the whole, even when one model doesn't look the part. And he looks in love and she looks like she's just posing - no emotion.

I agree with you, ALIASd. I think the photo is beautiful and very unique. I wish they would put these images out in poster size for us to buy. I would buy this one. Zac is dreamy. (I sort of have a "Mrs. Robinson" type crush on him. I get kidded at work a lot.)

Maybe that info would help with any confusion. Along with the character's signature color, pink.

Oh, how does the new D23 fit in with SB?

The pink does help, but it still takes a bit to figure it out. YMMV, and obviously did.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of 'Sleeping Beauty's release and the recent return of the walk-through would seem like natural content for the new magazine. The print project seems very Vanity Fair-lite to me.

this image is awkward, i agree. i don't take issue with the artistic choices, but rather the position of vanessa's head and face. it looks very stiff and awkward. Her neck, cheek, and jawline look strange and not like herself. there's clearly been a bit of work done in terms of increasing shading to provide more definition to her neck and face, but it's not a relaxed pose still. the previous photos have looked relaxed and natural in their posing, like a flowing movement that was frozen by the camera. I agree that it's not consistent.

Vanessa looks okay (and a lot like Rose McGowen) in the photo.... and Zac's just creepy.
