We have the Blockbuster at home rental where they mail you the movies, cuz with 5 kids it gets expensive and annoying. We live out here in riverside( southern cali) and we still have a drive-in here and if they play anything good we pack up the kids and head there.
I love movies, hubby and I try to go by ourselves when we can.
I love theaters as far as the size and the sound and all that, but for all the same reasons as everyone else I only go for the big films that will be better if seen that way. Mostly i just don't have time to follow a theater schedule or deal with all the crap that goes along with it. I often miss even the films I desperately want to see.
DVD works great for me (wether it be purchase, rental, whatever). I have a nice big widescreen TV, surround sound, comfortable couch with dog to keep me comfy, and it's all on my own schedule. If I get out of work late, but I'm too wired to crash I can stay up til 1am watching a flick. If I get tired in the middle I go to bed and finish watching in the morning.
The theater experience is just so hit or miss and i know that we've walked away from theaters having not enjoyed a film because of the atmospheric conditions (other patrons) when we should have really enjoyed the film.
I tend to base my choice on the movie - horrors/thrillers work best for me in the intimate home setting but comedies (good comedies) are nearly always better seen at the theatre because of the whole-crowd-laughing thing...
But the price (and other theatre-goers ) have changed me from a once-a-week movie goer to once a month.
Before I had children I went to the movies an average once every two weeks, love love LOVE the theater. However since I am a single mom and daycare is slim to come by I only go to the theater if its something my kids can watch. Since they are 5 and 9, that usually limits me to PG 13 and under films. However, every once in awhile my mother is polite and watches them and I get to have a movie date with myself. Last two movies I saw were Batman Returns and Mr. and Mrs. Smith (fabulous IMHO)
Otherwise I Netflix everything I can't watch with the kids which is a lot. LOL
If I dont actually GO to the movies, or see it on a plane, then the likelyhood of me ever seeing it is nearly zero. I never rent.
IMHO movies that are meant for the theatre should be seen on a big screen. Not that I WONT watch something on dvd at home, I just purposely choose not to rent. Sounds wacky I know but whoever said I wasn't wacky???
