Disney joins NBC and News Corp on Hulu

Disney joins NBC and News Corp. with Hulu stake - BusinessWeek

The Walt Disney Co. is taking a stake in Hulu.com. This means titles from The Walt Disney Studios library of films and full-length episodes of ABC television shows will join the online video site.

Disney joins NBC Universal, News Corp. and private equity firm Providence Equity Partners, who own Hulu in a joint venture.

Disney said Chief Executive Robert Iger, Disney/ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney and Kevin Mayer, a Disney senior vice president, will join Hulu's board.
There is no date that the Disney content will be available, however, this is a HUGE blow to YouTube and should increase Hulu's viewership immensely.

AWESOME!!!!! I love Hulu, and this makes it a million times better!!!
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

It's interesting that they took a stake in the company vs just an agreement for content. It's been rumored for a bit about the Disney deal - but the investment part is interesting.

Let's hope Disney thinks beyond the current ABC lineup and Disney Channel Tween Sitcoms.

This is great. Hulu already has a lot of older cartoons like Speed Racer and Voltron. I think it'd be fantastic to see the older television programming... like the Wuzzles or something.

Disney will probably be very careful not to put too much of their library on there though.

Re: Disney joins NBC and News Corp on Hulu

As far as content, Disney said in their press release:

Following the closing, content available to Hulu users will include:
    • Full-length episodes of ABC primetime programs like Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Samantha Who?, Scrubs, Private Practice and popular late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live
    • Full-length episodes of hit ABC Family series like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Greek
    • Popular series from ABC Daytime and SOAPnet like General Hospital and The View
    • Classic series from ABC's library like Hope & Faith, Less than Perfect, Commander in Chief, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Dancing with the Stars
    • Select hit programs from Disney Channel like Wizards of Waverly Place and Phineas and Ferb which can be easily accessed from a new DISNEY location in the Channel section of Hulu.com
    • Popular library titles from The Walt Disney Studios
    • Short-form content including webisodes, sneak peeks and episode recaps from ABC Entertainment, ABC Family and SOAPnet
"Popular library titles" could cover a pretty wide--or pretty limited--range. I'm inclined to believe it will be more recent live action titles and not anything from the classic animation library--not as long as there's still money to make by selling them on Blu-ray first. You can scratch "Song of the South" for that reason as well, among others.

Fraggle Rock isn't Disney so there's still hope the Henson Co. will put that up....but Disney does own the Muppets, so maybe we'll see some Muppet Show, or even Muppets Tonight!

Disney considers "Commander-In-Chief" to be a classic? Apparently they've changed their minds since the show was cancelled mid-way through its first season....
