Disney park near Seoul, South Korea? - Discussion

In the news article posted here and here it mentions a possiblity of Disney building a theme park in South Korea.

What do you think? Is this similar to when we saw news articles on Disney building in India a few months back or is this different? Will something come from this? Even if it isn't a park? Would this be a good move for Disney or is it something they might be forced into to present and market their company?

I'm with O-nut on this one. Focus on the the existing parks. WHen they run out of improvments there, then they can build another one (hahahahahahhaa). Besides, why so many in Asia? with parks in Japan and Hong kong now, why do they need another one in that region?

See, this is the cheapening of the Disney brand. No Disney theme park is original except for the castles. They copy rides from to another, and they build new parks before focusing on the crappy ones they just completed.

So let's see... DCA needs help, MGM Studios needs help, Hong Kong just opened and it needs help....

Disney lost huge amounts of money in Paris. It may go bankrupt. Tokyo is doing OK but TokyoSeas is getting mixed reviews from Japanese. There has been a decline in attendance since opening. HK Disneyland has opened with "light" attendance. A second park for HK DL is already planned. Shanghai Disneyland is not even started but will be built.

While American parks are making boat loads of money and overseas parks are at best breaking even or at worst hemorrhaging money, would you continue to invest in overseas parks?

Iger takes over on Friday. He has already said that one of his major initiatives is to increase income from overseas. So more investments in Asia makes sense to him, but to the common person looking on, it looks crazy!

I guess it takes an MBA to understand!

No more parks overseas, especially in Asia. They already have three parks (two resorts- Tokyo & Hong Kong). They work harder to make the existing parks instead of building more in areas that already have Disney parks. Also, does anyone notice that they spend much more time, effort and money on the parks in Asia than in North America (Tokyo got DisneySea, while Anaheim- where DisneySea should have been built- got stupid DCA). I do know that the Asian parks are owned (or operated- whatever) by seperate company and are not run by Disney, but if Disney starts putting in the effort that the Asian parks are getting- the North American parks would be even better.

We should have gotten WESTCOT, but there is still a possibility. It wouls just take a lot more money than it would have originally. That is what you get for looking at the bottom line and cost-cutting

Disney should take a cue from McDonald's. Build a cheap ugly park everywhere in the world! Sure, the brand will be devalued and nobody will care, but I bet the extra money will do wonders to Iger's retirement!

Seriously, I've come to accept the fact that the Golden Age of Disney was doomed to end when Walt died. He was the driving force behind the company. Now we have some dudes who only care about money, money, money. Greedy, self-serving businessmen who couldn't care less about the original concept or vision of Walt.

Don't forget there was a Second Golden Age. Eisner did oversee some great accomplishments including Epcot and The Lion King. I think he got too caught up in the whole stock boom. He focused too much on the stock price and took his eye off the big picture, which is the future of the company.

If they want to expand further, maybe they should have the Oriental Land Company manage it. They seem to understand that a park can't be opened in a partially built state.

    1) When Walt Disney died, there was one Disney theme park in the world (guess which one). All the favourite rides, PotC and HM (yes Disney worked on them before), the Three Mountains (Matterhorn was built before the death), all came after Walt. It's a little OTT to start storming around making wild statements.

    2) DifrntDrmr, I agree with your point, but Epcot opened before Eisner came. Yes, though, there was a second (maybe even third if Disneyland, the MK and Epcot in the late 70s, early 90s were the second age) age with Eisner.
