The Fallen Princess Project (WARNING: GRAPHIC PICTURES!!!)

While we all remember the beautiful pictures that Annie Leibovitz did of various celebrities posing as different Disney characters, Photographer Dina Goldstein has gone one step further and is showing what happened to the princesses in real life. The result is... well... I'll let you decide.

    Snow White

    Cinderella

    Rapunzel as a cancer patient

    Little Red Riding Hood

    Sleeping Beauty

    Jasmine

    Belle

On the photographers website JPG Magazine: Stories: The Project: Fallen Princesses , she says she will be doing 2 more in October.

To me, these pictures are .... well.... grotesque.
    Growing older is manditory
    Growing up is however, optional

WOW. I'm transfixed. Don't know what to say. But in some strange way, I find them really interesting and thought provoking.

When you take the princess out of the fantasy and put them in real life . . .

    Ick.

I think the wonderful thing about fairy tales...is..they aren't real life. Heck, it's great to have something that's not filled with real life struggles, disappointments, trials and sadness. Fairy tales are where good triumphs, beauty is everywhere, and little girls can be princesses and be swept off their feet. Little boys can be the prince that fearlessly slays the dragon. Why do we need to make those things into something real? I think we need to turn real life into fairy tales. Not the other way around.

They are interesting. The Jasmine one seems the least "real" as she seems too well done up for what is going on around her.

Re: The Fallen Princess Project (WARNING: GRAPHIC PICTURES!!!)

    From the artist herself-
These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess.

As a young girl, growing up abroad, I was not exposed to Fairy tales. These new discoveries lead to my fascination with the origins of Fairy tales. I explored the original brothers Grimm's stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney's perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

I think the photos are intruguing. There's something about them that compels me to look at them. It's certainly provocative, to say the least.
Amnesia used to be my favourite word, but I forgot it.

wouldn't it make morse sense if Snow white was the one getting plastic surgery instead of Belle?

Anyway this is vary interesting and well done. I wonder what she'll do with the little mermaid...
