Disney/DreamWorks' deal kicks off with Spielberg's 'Harvey' remake

Elwood P. Dowd and 'Harvey' will be reborn in a new film adaptation by director Steven Spielberg for DreamWorks. It's kicks off the new distribution deal with Disney and the recently acquired finance fund from Reliance. The film will be a co-production with 20th Century Fox.

In this version Harvey is a street-smart wisecracking tough guy helping his friend Elwood learn about humanity through hijinks and zany mayhem! Features Jack Black as Harvey and Johnny Depp as Elwood P. Dowd.

Well, that bites. Not the deal between Disney and DreamWorks, but a remake of "Harvey." Though I can see where that might be the type of film that attracts Spielberg.

But, when will Hollywood learn you cannot replace the classics.

    Jimmy Stewart,
Josephine Hull, who won an Oscar for her preformance,
    and even Jesse White.

    All irreplacable.

Still, I'll save some money, as having seen the original, I have no interest in seeing the remake.

Really? That was painfully obvious sarcasm. Had a touch of truth I suppose, but Speilberg working with Black and Depp? Nah.

Add me to the list of those that believe this film doesn't need remaking. I understand the concept of reintroducing the classics, but I though Spielberg was beyond this. His last remake, War of the Worlds, was one of the most abysmal pieces of junk I'd seen.

Re: Disney/DreamWorks' deal kicks off with Spielberg's 'Harvey' remake

Is no one else reeling in shock that Disney has gotten in bed with Dreamworks???? I mean, this is the same deal that Disney used to have with pixar. It's DREAMWORKS for god's sake. Their movies are terrible. With the exception of Shrek and I've heard Kung Fu Panda the movies they make are puerile trash..... I'm croggled.

edit: ok, I didn't know that this was just for the live action movies... whew! Not that I'm a huge fan of live action dreamworks movies but at least it's not as confusing. Although I think the article that says that Dreamworks animation is competition for Pixar is overly ambitious of them

Spielberg is presently focusing on his "reimagining" of "Harvey," with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit.

Re: Disney/DreamWorks' deal kicks off with Spielberg's 'Harvey' remake

*shrug* Much as I love Spielberg, I'm kinda underwhelmed by the prospect of him remaking Harvey, and the news that Robert Downey Jr. is in the lead role, much as I have enjoyed his work as an actor, has me pretty much nonplussed.

This is not to say that the final product won't be enjoyable, of course; I expect it will be. I'm just, well, not all that excited about this particular project. The Lincoln project, though? That one I'm more interested in seeing what Spielberg can do with it.

The official announcement may be a week or two away, but the word is that Robert Downey Jr. is poised to go down the rabbit hole in director Steven Spielberg's adaptation of "Harvey," the Pulitzer-winning stage play that reached the screen in 1950 with a beloved performance by Jimmy Stewart.

Re: Disney/DreamWorks' deal kicks off with Spielberg's 'Harvey' remake

Steven Spielberg has officially withdrawn from 'Harvey.' He spent the last half year developing the picture to be his first directing vehicle for the reconstituted DreamWorks.

Spielberg delivered the news this week to 20th Century Fox, which had earmarked soundstages on the Fox lot in anticipation of an early 2010 production start. Fox had agreed to have DreamWorks finance 50% of the production through its new funding relationship with Reliance, and either distribute domestically or internationally through its agreement with Disney.
