Disney reportedly seeks court block of child TV changes

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Walt Disney Co. (DIS) asked a federal appeals court Tuesday to block new federal rules requiring broadcasters to expand children's educational programming, saying the regulations violate the free speech rights of the company's ABC television network, The Los Angeles Times reported in its Wednesday editions.

I read this article this afternoon and thought it was completely ludicrous! The Bill of Rights clearly states in some way or another, that the government can't control programming of television, along with whatever is written in the press, unless its public showing; even then it can only be regulated and/or censored. Its the right of Disney along with NBC to show whatever they wish on their private stations...

They're not private stations. They are public airwaves regulated by the federal government. They're regulated so that six competing broadcasters don't use the same frequency and drown each other out.
Cable stations are different, but the ground under which, or the poles onto which, the cable is placed is allowed by permission of a local government, so the local government can place rules on cable, such as access, etc.

That all said, it's probably a lot easier for the major broadcasters simply to make a required contribution to PBS to let it show the required hours of children's programming for the broadcaster.
