Ross stalls out 'Wild Hogs' sequel, 'Old Dogs' still to blame

The sequel to 2007's unlikely hit was already gunning its engine to start shooting next year with John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and William H Macy all in negotiations to reprise their roles as middle aged friends who become biker buddies.

Disney had even ordered the first draft of the script, from original writer Brad Copeland, with new versions underway.

While no one at the studio is talking about exactly why it was shut down, a big part of it had to be the poor performance of the Travolta/Robin Williams comedy Old Dogs, which flopped into US cinemas last month.

This marks the third film Ross has put away, following 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea last month and another Robin Williams comedy, Wedding Banned just last week.

Ross is quickly becoming known as someone who is cancelling more projects than greenlighting... Wild hogs 2 albeit uncreative would probably yield the studios a nice profit

the production budget on old dogs was 35 million so far the movie has made 40 million domestically. I don't see how they could automatically all ready call it a flop.

Seems like these low budget movies easily could turn a profit once they are released worldwide and especially once released on dvd.

I have to agree with the previous post. wild hogs 2 would have probably have brought Disney a good profit.

I also think that they just they did a bad choice with the marketing for old dogs. The small repetitive clips did nothing to interest me yet the marketing program for wild hogs at least gave the three stars look humurous

I see this as a GOOD thing from a creative standpoint.

You're right, especially since it goes against every conventional sequel practices following a big hit. It could have made even more money potentially because it supposedly had the guys riding through Europe this time around providing the studio with more international draw for distribution to work with in foreign markets. This is a pretty gutsy move on Ross' part, will wait and see where this line of thinking is heading.

It is obviously not along the same route that helped Mr. Cook to the door. I can't help but think that he probably regrets everyday that he took that cameo as a train engineer in 'Race to Witch Mountain', one of the very reasons pointed to as why the executive change was made.

It's not all about making money, it's about making Quality Film Franchises that stand the test of time. Eisner watered the brand down by discounting quality and still charging premiums. Iger wants to bring the quality of the Brand back to where it once was. He obviously wants to make money, but he also wants you to feel you got your money's worth. Eisner believed in the Power of the Disney name to make money, Iger believes in DISNEY.

It's not about art or being creative. It's about money. Shloads of it.

You're only as good as your last film.

Old Dogs was hated by critics, and ignored by the general public.

Ross wants to stop the bleeding. Fast.

Honestly, I thought Old Dogs was a funny movie. Yes, this coming from a person who has not seen Wild Hogs. But I thought that Travolta and Williams were hilarious! That's my opinion though.
