    Marvel stockholders approve Disney deal

    MARVEL STOCKHOLDERS APPROVE DISNEY MERGER

New York, New York – December 31, 2009 -- Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: MVL), a global character-based entertainment and licensing company founded in 1939, announced that at a special meeting held this morning, Marvel stockholders approved the adoption of the Agreement and Plan of Merger entered into by Marvel and The Walt Disney Company (“Disney”), which provides for a merger in which Marvel will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Disney. Marvel anticipates that the merger, which, based on the closing price of Disney’s common stock on December 30, 2009, has an estimated value of approximately $4.3 billion, will be completed today after the close of the market.

The completion of the merger is subject to satisfaction of remaining conditions disclosed in the definitive proxy statement/prospectus filed by Disney with the Securities and Exchange Commission pursuant to Rule 424 on December 2, 2009.

Hoping Marvel will continue operating successfully!

Now the big question is "What kind of changes will happen now?"

    That's absolutely appalling.

Hang onto your hats, kids. Now that the suits have gotten a taste for acquiring properties rather than creating them, there's no stopping them now. No doubt we'll soon be seeing the Smurfs mingling with the Seven Dwarfs and Pound Puppies cavorting with the 101 Dalmatians. Won't THAT make a pretty picture?

I don't see how this point A even gets close to your proposed point B.

Well, Pirates of the Carribean, Alice in Wonderland...those are properties. They created them, as well as an entire thing of merchandising too, so...you know.

I don't know personally at all about this Marvel acquisition. I'm skeptical about it, since I said in another thread Universal is more suited for this than Disney.

FYI, Disney didn't create Alice in Wonderland, that was Lewis Carroll

PotC, yes, that was Disney. As was the Haunted Mansion, and Country Bear Jamboree, the attractions, AND the movies.

Precisley. Walt Disney's been buying rights to various projects all his career.

Correction: Disney used to buy (primarily) literary properties that seemed appropriate for the Disney brand and then gave them the unique Disney spin. The current suits just buy properties, whether they fit in or not, in an effort to please stockholders. A bit of a difference there.
