Up is far from my fave Pixar film, but I'm pleased that it's nommed for Best Picture. It's no "Beauty and the Beast", mind you, but it's a worthy effort.

And yay, "Almost There" got nommed. I loved that part of the movie. Pity it went downhill from there.

I think we know that Avatar will likely get best picture...but, the question remains: is it an animated film, or not?

There's a bunch of movies I haven't seen, but for best supporting actor, definitely Cristoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds.

And I see they are holding off until March for the Oscars this year. Must be because of the Olympics.

Why do you say it went downhill from there?

He was SO great in that movie and it's a MUCH deserved nomination (and hopefully win).

This award is pretty much in the bag for Sandra Bullock. In fact, I think the 4 acting categories are pretty much decided at this point.

    Actor: Jeff Bridges
    Actress: Sandra Bullock
    Supporting Actor: Chistoph Waltz
    Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique

    Unless something drastic happens.

i'm glad to see that Up is nominated for best picture. i would love to see it win, animation would gain a new level of respect. but in reality i don't think it will win. i can see it going to The Hurt Locker or Up in the Air (which i loved). i hope it doesn't go to Avatar. the movie was really cool but i don't think it should walk away w/ an oscar for best pic.

I think it's possible Streep might beat Bullock, but I agree that the other three are locks.

I suspect the ten nominess for best picture will be a short-lived experiment.

I wish Star Trek had squeezed in there, but c'est la vie.

It's possible, but unlikely Streep will win. Sandra has swept all of the previous awards (Golden Globe, SAG, etc) and it would really be surprising.

Honestly, I think the 10 nominations is going to do just what people thought it would do ... get more people to watch.

In a normal year a movie like UP, District 9, The Blind Side or probably even Precious wouldn't get nominated. But people are going to watch because those films got nominated.

Now if they do this for 2 or 3 years, and movies that nobody has ever heard of keep winning, then they will have to re-think it.

IMO, the time for them to have separate categories for Drama, Comedy even Action/Sci-Fi is LONG overdue. If they REALLY want to get people to watch, they should have categories people want to see.

And I also would have liked to see both Star Trek and The Hangover get a nomination. I was VERY surprised that The Blind Side got in to be honest. But having 3 Sci-Fi movies nominated for best picture in one year was probably asking too much of the Academy.

*nodding like probably* I kind want to see "The Blind Side". But I want to see "Precious" more.

    Film Editing Nominees

Avatar: Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua and James Cameron

    District 9:
    Julian Clarke

The Hurt Locker: Bob Murawski and Chris Innis

    Inglourious Bastards: Sally Menke

    Precious: Joe Klotz

This is the technical/creative category I always follow. I can't make a pick yet, since I still have to see several of these films. I don't like having 10 films in the Best Picture category. I think it starts giving the category a strip mall mentality. It's not so special when every other commercial will be advertising they are nominated for a Best Picture.

To be fair, their Oscar nominated roles weren't directly competing at the Globes due to the separation of Comedy/Drama. So, while I agree that Sandra has all the buzz and the momentum, Streep is Streep and all she has to do is enter a room and someone will hand her an award. So I say it's 50/50 between them and the only potential upset would be one of the other nominees pulling an unlikely win.

I'm rooting for pretty much anything that isn't Avatar. I respect the technical achievements, but beyond the flashy visuals and the bucket loads of cash it's made I really don't see how it's an awards worthy overall film (outside of the technical categories).

As far as the Film Editing, the only movie I haven't seen from that bunch is Precious. I'm thinking it could go to District 9 or maybe Avatar.

I thought Streep was nominated for Drama for Julie and Julia and Comedy for It's Complicated. Or was it Comedy for both?
