Christopher Nolan making next Superman Movie???

We assumed all this time that Christopher Nolan was dragging his heels on a third Batman film because he wanted to put all his focus on Inception before moving on to the next thing. Nope! As it turns out, Warner Bros. was forcing Nolan to take on another iconic American superhero, and presumably Nolan was trying to duck the responsibility before just giving in. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Nolan will be mentoring yet another reboot of the Superman franchise, even as work finally begins on the third Batman film.

Superman 3.0, as Deadline is calling, is in such infancy that even the studio insiders admit, "Warner Bros doesn't have a handle yet on it." All they really know is they're pretending Superman Returns doesn't exist, though apparently it's vaguely possible that Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh would be involved (though if you were Bryan Singer, would you go near this?) In the words of another source, "We know what we don't want to do. But we don't know what we want to do. We learned a lot from the last movie, and we want to get it right this time." Nolan would almost definitely not be directing or writing the film, but helping shepherd the project as the golden child of superhero movies, and maybe even picking a writer and director.

I know what you're already thinking-- a dark and gritty Superman! But while I know absolutely nothing about what's in store, I'd say not so fast. The reason Nolan hit it out the park with Batman is because he stayed true to the character, a guy who was dark and brooding by nature. Superman, on the other hand, has never really been that way-- sure he's got plenty of emotions to grapple with and has the whole alien backstory, but he's the bright and shining American hero to Batman's gloomy antihero.

I'm willing to give Nolan a shot considering the great things he's done with Batman.

I thought Superman Returns was pretty good, and would have liked Singer to take another shot at it.

Nolan clearly knows how to make a good superhero movie, so if this is true, I'm all for that as well.

I actually thought Superman Returns was pretty good as well. Not sure why it was pretty widely disliked.

Then again, I liked The Phantom, so my opinion probably doesn't mean much.

rings a bit hollow for me. Nolan is a prime grade A property for WB. Begging him to be involved with Supe would seem far more accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if they've offered him a producer's cut and credit if he writes and/or decided to direct it as well. He's even more important to them until he gets a 3rd Batman film in front of the cameras. And bet they've given him whatever he wants for this summer's 'Inception'. Keeping him happy and on the WB lot is a massive priority, particularly since 'Harry Potter' will soon be flying out their door for good.

Nolan, for the record, also won’t confirm that he is actually directing the third Batman film, but, well, of course he is -- however “Inception” isn’t in the can yet and it’s against his code. He can’t be easily tricked, either. Asked if Superman as a franchise has to overcome a deficiency of truly great villains, unlike, say, Spider-Man and Batman, he won’t bite. “That’s a very sly way of asking a question I’m not going to answer.”

Nolan says he has no idea who will direct the Superman film (there has been conjecture that it may be his brother and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan) but his role appears to be comparable to Peter Jackson with “District 9,” which was directed by newcomer Neill Blomkamp but benefited greatly from imprimatur of “The Lord of the Rings” auteur. Jackson is also stepping into a similar role in Middle-earth as Guillermo del Toro takes over as director for “The Hobbit” films.
