'Last Song' tops daily boxoffice rankingsDisney's Miley Cyrus starrer "The Last Song" hit all the right notes in its first day of domestic release on Wednesday in fetching an estimated $5.1 million to top the daily boxoffice rankings.
With a base of support among the topliner's tween female fans, "Song" always figured to be front-loaded in its five-day opening run. But its first-day tally was a bit better than anticipated, suggesting cumulative boxoffice of $20 million or more through Sunday.
"The whole idea of opening on a Wednesday was to try to set ourselves apart from the competition," Disney distribution boss Chuck Viane said. "There are a lot of big pictures out there, and the only way to get noticed is to get out there and strut your stuff."
The midweek bow also gave "Song" a jump on the Easter frame. Many students will enjoy a stretched weekend, and that should pump up grosses through Friday.
