Pixar out of new movie ideas?

    The next 3 out of 4 Pixar movies are sequels;

    TS3
    Cars 2
    Brave
    Monsters 2

    Seems a little strange...

It is a bit unsettling. Though isn't Bear now called "BRAVE"? (i know, slightly off topic)

Seems to me that they're using the opportunity to revisit wildly successful characters and expand their roster of feature directors at the same time. There's been no mention yet of Pete Docter directing the sequel. Andrew Stanton's and Brad Bird's foray into live-action with 'John Carter of Mars' now shooting and the stuck-in-budget-hell '1906' respectively also seems like the other great natural extention for the company. They certainly have no shortage of animation story talent in the building.

Pixar had been developing a version of 'The Frog Prince' prior to Lasseter's taking over at WDAS, 'Newt' was on the calendar and now it's not and 'Brave' seems to have skirted the too-girly issues that seemed to have plagued 'The Princess and the Frog'. Buying time to develop new films while delivering quality sequels isn't the worst thing that could happen.

I'm guessing this is what happens when Disney buys them out. Pixar doesn't call the shots anymore... Disney does. I think this will be the new trend. At least maybe one sequel for every one new movie.

    We have a winner!!

In all fairness to both Disney and Pixar, TS3 is a bit more complex than simply being a cash cow sequel.

It originally began as a Circle 7 project that was blessed by Eisner, with the sole intention of competing directly with Pixar, which was then poised to not renew their distribution contract with Disney. But once Pixar was acquired by Disney, Circle 7 was toasted by JL, who brought the film back to Emeryville for a complete re-write by Michael Arndt.

Is Monsters2 a cash cow sequel? I'm not sure. Possibly. But I suspect it was more about newt having development problems and being canned, which would have left Pixar with an empty summer slot to fill.

Doing a CG sequel is faster and cheaper than an original story, since most of your character data sets are production ready. Just tweak an existing story idea, whip out a script, re-hire your main voice talent (Goodman and Crystal loved making the first one, so it's a no-brainer they would be back), and VOILA! Three years or so later, you've got your summer film.

As for Cars2... definitely a cash cow sequel, given the billions Disney has made from the franchise merch sales.

Or in this case, a holiday film, since Brave was pushed out to summer.

Three out of the FIVE next movies they're doing. You sure know how to warp statistics.
The five worst crimes in the world, in no particular order, are genocide, rape, murder, torture, and flash photography on Space Mountain.

I think they're just cashing in on the name they've built for themselves a bit. They're not out of ideas... they just had great ideas about things they've done and are willing to take some time to do that.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Not sure where you're getting five films from. Only four have been announced:

    TS3
    Cars2
    Brave
    Monsters2

If you think the fifth film is newt, think again.

    It's been cancelled.

    I agree with this.

And comeon'...we'd be alll lying if we said when Sully opened the door to Boo's room agian we'd all frantically hope to see "a bigger" Boo.

Pixar gives so much life into thier stories that, to me, it seems almost dumb not to expand on the ideas and build up character complexitys (sp) more into a second movie.

I was skeptical about the 2nd TS and was proved wayyyy wrong. TS3 looks up on par with the rest, why would they take a break from quailty if they know the auidence is enjoying it...or atleast paying for a ticket.

    It wasn't widely publicized.

As was I. And according to Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, Toy Story 3 is better than the first two! That's pretty bold thing to say.

Re: Pixar out of new movie ideas?

Until Pixar comes out with a REALLY bad movie or REALLY bad sequel, I'm going to continue to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll admit to not really being up on the creation of, or the story of Cars 2 (at least not from what we saw at D23). But again, until they prove me wrong, I'm going to continue to have faith in them.

And I'll second REALLY wanting to see A Bugs Life 2. A Bugs Life is STILL my favorite Pixar movie.
