    Re: 'Toy Story 3' by-the-numbers

Disney's release of the third installment in the blockbuster franchise roared out of the gate, collecting an estimated $41 million at the North American boxoffice on Friday.

The G-rated feature, directed by Lee Unkrich, found business booming at the 4,025 locations where it is playing as it heads toward a weekend haul in the $115 million to $120 million range.

"Toy's" Friday number was nearly double the opening-gross of last year's Pixar entry, "Up," and guarantees that the new movie will post the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated movie.

Such a great movie, just saw it a few hours ago and want to go see it again. It has so much emotion that at times its like an emotional rollercoaster. Makes you laugh makes you really care for the characters and makes you cry at the right moments.

Disney/Pixar did it again no wonder we see Pixar attractions outnumbering WDA attractions at the parks

    Re: 'Toy Story 3' by-the-numbers

    Domestic box office:

Like kids ripping the wrapping paper off of a present, moviegoers rushed to Disney's "Toy Story 3" this weekend as Pixar's newest hit rang up an estimated $109 million.

Playing in 4,028 theaters, the further animated adventures of Woody, Buzz and the gang, this time in 3-D, posted the best opening weekend for a Pixar movie ever, leap-frogging the $70.5 million that "The Incredibles" posted in 2004.

Its slightly-frontloaded Friday gross of $41 million was the top opening day for an animated movie, besting the $39.4 million that "Shrek the Third" rang up in 2007, although "Toy" stopped short of setting a new weekend opening record for an animated movie, which the third "Shrek" still holds with $121.6 million.

With 11 number one openings for its 11 movies, Pixar's track record remains unbroken. "That kind of streak is unbeatable," Chuck Viane, Disney domestic distribution president, said. "They're the greatest story-tellers around. (Director) Lee Unkrich found a way to take everyone's best friends, Woody and Buzz," and deliver the goods like crazy."

'Toy Story 3' kicks 'Karate Kid' from top spot

    International box office:

Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," the weekend's front-ranked domestic film, also opened No. 1 on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $44.8 million from 4,787 screens in 25 territories -- only a quarter of the total overseas marketplace.

Monster debuts in China and Latin America helped the film register "the biggest consolidated debut for a Pixar title from this bucket of release markets, almost doubling the (comparable) high set by ' Up, " said Disney. That 2009 title drew total foreign boxoffice of $438 million (versus $293 million domestic).

Top market for the Pixar animation threequel was Mexico, where "Toy Story 3" generated $14.3 million, which Disney described as the biggest market opening ever for an animation title.

In China, "Toy Story 3" grossed $9.5 million on the weekend, also a record market debut for an animation film. Brazil came up with 3.3 million, best market opening to date for a Pixar title, while Argentina tallied $2.3 million, another record market opening.

As it has for all previous Pixar titles, Disney is releasing "Toy Story 3" in a months-long, graduated overseas rollout to capitalize on local market conditions around the world. The threequel this week bows in eight territories including Australia and India.

Toy Story 3 will deserve the very success it gets. If it continues through word of mouth, it could beat "Finding Nemo" as the highest grossing Pixar movie ever.

Toy Story 3 momentum is incredible. Just had second biggest Tuesday in Disney history (behind 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest') -- 6th biggest in industry history.

    Re: 'Toy Story 3' by-the-numbers

    Domestic box office:

Sony's ensemble comedy "Grown Ups" opened impressively during the weekend with an estimated $41 million in domestic boxoffice. But Disney/Pixar's 3D three-quel "Toy Story 3" easily repeated at No. 1 with a $59 million sophomore session -- just 47% less loot than in the previous frame -- yielding $226.6 million in cumulative coin.
The "Toy Story" three-quel amassed its huge 10-day cume on core support from family audiences padded significantly by fervor among date-movie couples and adult moviegoers generally.

"You can tell how broadly it's playing by the later performances," Disney distribution boss Chuck Viane said. "We're used to doing well at the matinees. But when you wake up in the morning and see those evening numbers, it's because adults are coming out to those two evening shows."

A total 2,463 locations played "TS3" on at least one 3D screen, accounting for 60% of the pic's second-weekend boxoffice, or $35.4 million. High-grossing Imax 3D venues contributed $4.3 million of the extra-dimensional moolah.

    International box office:

Grossing a total of $100 million in overseas boxoffice since it opened offshore a week ago, Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" retained the weekend's No. 1 spot on the foreign theatrical circuit for a second consecutive round with $36.1 million drawn from 6,278 screens in 32 markets.

Worldwide total for the latest in the Pixar franchise amounts to $326.6 million. Distributor Disney is projecting that, "based on its current performance trajectory, 'Toy Story 3' looks to easily surpass" the $361.9 million total rolled up by the 1995 original in less than three weekends of worldwide release.

Propelled by what Disney terms "record setting" runs in Latin America -- contributing $62.2 million to "Toy Story 3's" overseas total so far -- the 3D three-quel is already the biggest Pixar title ever to play the area. Mexico alone has generated $34 million over just 10 days.

The weekend's Australia opening provided $6.2 million from 365 screens while its South Africa bow contributed $1.1 million (including previews) from just 72 sites for a $15,278 per-screen average, the market's biggest opening weekend ever. New markets accounted for $9.1 million of the $36.1 million weekend tally.

In all, "Toy Story 3" has amassed its $100 million overseas total from just 35% of the overall international marketplace. Disney's gradual rollout of the film takes it to New Zealand and Turkey this week. Key European market openings (Italy, France, U.K., Spain and Germany) plus Japan and Hong Kong won't occur until next month.

    International Box Office:

Third on the weekend was Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," which grossed $25.5 million from 5,001 screens in 34 territories, with Latin American markets providing $89.3 million or 60% of the film's total overseas take. Mexico alone has provided a market cume of $44.7 million.

After being released in only 37% of the total international marketplace, the animation threequel in 3D rolled up a total foreign tally of $150.8 million.

    Domestic Box Office:

Disney's 3D animated feature "Toy Story 3" collected $22 million in fourth place, pushing cume to a rarified $340.2 million through its fourth weekend.
'Despicable' puts sizzle in b.o. at No. 1

    International Box Office:

Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," also in 3D, took the weekend's third spot with $39.1 million derived from 6,992 venues in 39 territories. Overseas gross total for the animation threequel stands at $213.1 million extracted from a bit more than half of the international marketplace. Openings this week are due in France and Hong Kong, territories Disney characterizes as "representing approximately 10% of our potential business."

In Japan, "Toy Story 3" set a market opening record for a Disney animation title ($10.6 million from 456 venues). An Italy intro provided $5 million over five days at 428 sites. The film continues strongly in Latin American markets, which have provided $110 million of the film's $213.1
'Eclipse' still has bite at No. 1 overseas

Dipping nearly 40% from its prior weekend's No. 1 gross figure, Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" in 3D dropped to the weekend's No. 2 spot, capturing $39.1 million drawn from 8,213 screens in 48 markets and hoisting the film's accumulated foreign tally to $436.4 million and to $826.1 million worldwide.

The animation threequel finished No. 1 in its second U.K. round with $12.4 million drawn from 868 locations for a market cume of $61.4 million after 14 days, making "Toy Story 3" the third biggest-grossing animation title ever to play the territory. "Toy 3" also continues No. 1 in Japan where the fourth weekend provided $7.1 million from 529 venues for a market total of $61.8 million.
