'Voices of Character' AMPAS event 8/19

The Marc Davis Celebration of Animation:
    Voices of Character

Winnie the Pooh, Minnie Mouse, Dug the Dog, Natasha Fatale and more!!

Featuring voice artists Jim Cummings, June Foray, Yuri Lowenthal and Russi Taylor; animation director Bob Peterson and animator James Baxter; casting executive Rick Dempsey

Hosted by animation historian Charles Solomon

While animators have been called “actors with pencils” who toil vigorously to create the “illusion of life,” animated characters equally depend on the unique talents of voice artists to breathe life into their visual components. Vocal range and consistency, comic timing, emotional impact, character definition and song styling are just a few of the very specific choices that can make or break a coordinated effort between picture and sound. Our panel of experts will discuss how they approach their work, what they admire in the work of others, and perhaps even “sound off” on why their work isn’t nearly as appreciated as it should be.

A chance to see Bob Peterson in person? I'm there! I had fun at What's Opera Doc, so I'm looking forward to this

Wish I could go if it was closer to home I would make the drive. Sounds like something I'll just have to watch on You Tube though

I don't trust the mail. I printed them myself

Also attending "Out of This World: The Science of Space Movies" on Thursday.

The "What's Opera, Doc" was really good. Interesting people on stage as well as in the audience.

This was so cool. I was there last night and got there a little over an hour before it started. Later on Tony Anselmo (the voice of Donald Duck since 1985 and the current voice of Mickey Mouse sat right accross the aisle from me. I thought they looked familiar but I could not place their faces. When they announced that Alice Davis was there that was really cool as well. I am sure there were other "celebritys" there but I just did not recognize them.
The animation that they played at the beginning was absolutely amazing some classic pieces. Also they showed about a 5 minute clip of Monsters Inc in 30 languages which was very cool as well. To hear Bob Patterson do the voice of Roz was great and all the voice actors were incredibly funny. They did also play a clip of Walt doing the voice of Mickey which was amazing to see. When I was leaving Bob Patterson was outside the theatre signing autographs so I got his autograph. A little boy about 4 or 5 came up to shake his hand as he wanted to meet Doug and he spoke in Doug's voice which was cool.
There was also a Chuck Jones exhibit downstairs. This was really an amazing opportunity.

Thanks for the update! Really wish I could have gone. Sounds amazing. This is the first one I've missed in a while.

i got there a little late, about 20 minutes after it started. traffic was a real pain. my friends and i arrived when the Monsters Inc. in different languages was being shown (which i've already seen on the dvd). they were all so talented! Bob Peterson is hilarious! i loved when he did Roz and told stories about Pixar. it was amazing to see someone like June Foray on stage. hearing her do Natasha was unbelievable. she is such a legend. the event was very well done. i really wish we got a chance to hear the new Mickey Mouse thought : (

disneyfnatc, do you know who is everyone they recognized in the audience? i did hear the guy who does Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Kathryn Beaumont, and two others i couldn't hear. i'm assuming one was Alice Davis? there was an elderly man that stood up and i wish i heard who he was.

Cohetboy no problem this was the first time that I heard of this event and will try to go to future events at this place. It is amazing that they let the general public go to this.
The president of the Academy when he gave his opening remarks recognized Alice Davis which was amazing. I think the older gentleman was Stan Freberg. Everybody was really excited to see him and my friend was shocked that I did not know who he was. I guess he was the voice on like 400 looney toones or Warner Brothers cartoons. He was pretty much mobbed when the event was over.

I had a blast at this event. I was in awe of ALL the panelists. Even though Yuri and Susan are the "youngins" of the group, I was still amazed at their talent and their humility. Russi Taylor is just an adorable woman, I've loved her ever since I was a kid and to see what she's like in real life was something I didn't think I'd ever be able to do in my whole life. Can't wait for more of these AMPAS events.

@disneyfnact, Flickering Bulb, and loveberri87: Thanks to all of you for posting about this event. Haven't been able to find much of anything covering it on the web, so I really appreciate your sharing your thoughts on it.

Would you guys mind if I quoted your posts on my "Voice Actors in the News" blog? I'd also love to see any photos from the event (and so would my readers). And if any of you wanted to share a longer report of the event, I'd be open to publishing it for you along with a plug for whatever site you're connected with in return for taking the time to write a report for the blog.

    Thanks so much,
