The OC Register is saying that the train in front of the train at the station couldn't make it up the first lift hill and it rolled back into the train at the station.

Fishbulb was actually at Knott's when the accident happened and was able to speak with a witness and an employee.

One of the Pony Express trains failed to clear the launch hill and came rolling back toward the station, hitting another train. Although some guests were taken to the hospital for observation (we were told it was 8 people), there were no apparent serious injuries. The areas around Pony Express were blocked to guests during the Haunt to allow emergency personnel to assist the injured.

Knott's got lucky on this one.

Glad to hear there weren't any serious injuries incurred. Thanks for the first-hand fishbulb info, Dusty!

And I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but if this ride closes (for however long), I won't mind.

Here are some shots I took roughly 30-45 mins after the accident. As you can see, the ride was safely evacuated and everything was shut down immediately.

Thanks for the pictures, couldn't remember what the first hill looked like. Still weird that not rollback system engaged.

wow, I bet that was frightening to all ends for all those involved. Those who realized they were starting to go backwards... and everyone in the station who probably felt trapped and helpless

Certainly sounds like the system failed. I wonder if it will come out as a design flaw (new coaster builder). The coaster isn't that old, I would be suprised if it was some material failure inside spec. Hopefully doesn't come back as a maintenance issue.

Freaky. But the train couldn't get up the lift hill?

*insert random fat guest joke she'll be going to hell for here*

I'm just glad no one was seriously hurt. Sounds like Knott's handled the situation well too.

It's not a lift hill. Pony Express is a launched coaster from Zamperla. It uses a flywheel launch system.

Wouldn't be surprised if a new 'total train weight limit' gets imposed after this. Americans are simply too large for italian designed amusement rides.

Knott's Berry Farm coaster reopens after accident investigation - latimes.com

They have the cause of the accident. Apparently they painted over brake fins, which prevented them from stopping the car from rolling back when it failed to clear the first hill.
