    Re: 'Winnie the Pooh' 7/15/2011

I can't believe they released it at the same time as Harry Potter. I want to see this, but I saw Harry Potter instead because there's a sort of urgency to see it because I read the books and it's the last movie. Winnie the Pooh should have been released earlier in the summer or at some other time in the year. I do hope I get to see this in theaters, though, especially to see the short.

I've seen this movie twice already and I absolutely loved it both times! Such an excellent film!

So agree. After i watched it the first time I wanted to see it again immediately.

And after seeing how great the movie was, I hate the marketing and trailers for it even more now.

    And...

    Spoiler
They put the end of the movie in the trailer!!

I went into thinking that it's just going to be cute and silly, but it was hilarious! I was busting up laughing most of the time!

That actually might not have been a bad idea. It gave parents with younger children another movie choice, since HP7.2 wouldn't have been appropriate for them.

The budget for WTP was only $30 million, and in its first two weeks of release, it's already come close to making its money back.

I'm one of those moviegoers. Those types of moviegoers typically go to the theater and say "what's playing", not "what's opening this weekend". Infact, I know two familes with kids who said "Hary Potter was crowded, so we decided to see Winnie the Pooh".

Rio was released in April, and would have definitely put a dent into WTP. Since HP7.2 and WTP weren't in direct competition, it likely fared better opening when it did rather then opening with Rio. Also, African Cats was already scheduled for April.

Opening up against HP was suicide, especially considering that kids today grow up so fast that even a 6 year old will pick HP over Pooh if there's a choice. Maybe even 5 year olds would pick HP over Pooh. In addition, the marketing campaign for a return to traditional Pooh with hand-drawn animation was completed obscured and blown away by the HP marketing juggernaut. It was a big mistake and miscalculation on the part of Disney.

Plus, many folks still consider the Pooh franchise a pre-school property, what with their Tigger Movie, Heffalumps, Piglet Movie, etc. Disney's marketing team really failed to remind the vast majority that this film is going back to its roots.

I think the filmmakers did a fantastic job but marketing still hasn't a clue.
