Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

So as we approach the end of sweeps and the mid-season upon us, I am curious to see what shows liked and what they didn't and what shows will stick around despite fan reaction.

Me I am glad to see the return of quality sitcom programming in the wake of Raymond, Fraiser and Friends departing us, it looked bleak but newcomers "My Name is Earl" and "How I Met Your Mother" have faired really well with shows like "Out of Practice" and "Kitchen Confidential" barely scrapping by.

This tv season saw a return to the sci-fi genre after the success of Sci-Fi channel. Big winner was "Supernatural" with "Nightstalker" getting some pemenent sleep. Alien genre shows "Surface" "Invasion" and "Threshold" struggle to stay alive.

"E-Ring" and "Commander and Chief" have picked up steam with advertising and time changes where as big headliner shows with stars like Don Johnson and Chris O Donnell both respectavilly being cancelled. Fox also saw success in there new CSI-esqe show "Bones" with former Buffy star David Borienz.

Break out surprise hit of the fall turned out tobe "Prison Break" a place holder for 24 that surpassed all expectations and has been renewed but the season will end abruptly in Dec and remain on hiatus until the conclussion of 24 next summer.

What shows made your grade? Any disappointments? Any surprises?

I tried the first episode of "How I Met Your Mother" and just couldn't get into it. Same with "Everybody Hates Chris". I liked "Kitchen Confidential" ok, so I'm only marginally disappointed that it's been cancelled. I'm really enjoying "Out of Practice", which I believe is doing fairly well.

"Threshold" is my favorite of the new creepy bunch, though I don't know why they're moving it from Friday to Tuesday. "Invasion" had some annoying bits at first, but it's gotten a bit better. I really liked "Nightstalker" and am disappointed they've cancelled it. I hope they at least burn off the remaining episodes, especially the second part of the two-parter of which they've only shown the first part, after sweeps are over.

My favorite new show this season is "Reunion". It plays on a similar premise as "24" (this time, each episode is set in a different subsequent year), and I think the writing and acting are very good. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story continues to unravel.

Re: Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

I haven't gotten hooked on any new shows really. My can't miss shows are still the same four can't misses I had last year. I did try to get into Invasion. Followed for at least the first 4 eps (or more), but then missed a week or two and just seem to to care enough to get back into it. Tried Nightstalker also. Liked the vibe, but I'm glad I didn't get hooked because I would have been disapointed with it's cancellation. I enjoy Everybody Hates Chris, but it's only a watch if I'm around when it's on, not a seek out every week. Oddly enough I've been watching Freddie just to kill time before Lost and have found it to be mildly amusing and not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Other than that I don't have any time left in my schedule for new shows. If it's not on Sunday, Wednesday or Thursday there's a pretty good chance I'm not gonna be watching it (work).

I tried Invasion for a while, but the writing is so horrible that it hurt to listen, even in the background. Other than Lost, there really hasn't been any shows that I'd be willing to watch.
Marge: Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy Test? Homer, shouldn't we have gone with a better-known brand?
Homer: But Marge, this one came with a corn-cob pipe!
Marge: [reading from the test box] "Ahoy, Maties! If the water turns blue, a baby for you! If purple ye see, no baby thar be!"
Homer: So, which is it? Blue or purple?
    Marge: Pink.
    Homer: D'oh!
Marge: "If ye test should fail, to a doctor set sail!"

I'm not really attached to any shows this season, but I have to say that I do like Supernatural and My Name is Earl when I can catch it. I'm disappointed in House. I know that wasn't on the initial list, but I was really into that show last season, but now they're starting to splinter off attention onto so many different topics that there's lessening coherence in the storyline.

I could never really bond with Nightstalker although I tried. Maybe if it had a different name. I was a huge fan of the original and of Darren McGaven. They managed to suck everything I loved about the original out of the remake: the humor, the eccentricity and the borderline cheesy horror . It was too pretty, too stylish and too slick; not bad, just not The Nightstalker . I do like Supernatural; it's fun with good chemistry.

The shows I like this season all have an off beat feel to them. I like Bones, I'm glad it hung on with all the ballgame changes to its schedule.
I love Earl. Fun premise, good writing. I grew up in the south around rednecks (and lets face it, Bakersfield isn't known for its upper crust atmosphere) so I see bits of real people in the characters. What is it they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

I tried Night stalker as well and just couldn't get into. Whenever I heard the name "Kolchak" it made me cringe

    My hit's this season:

    Commander in Chief
    Invasion
    Super Natural
    Surface

I've watched Freddy a few times but the grand mother drives me insane. She can understand English perfectly yet they have her only speak Spanish with English subtitles, it gets old REALLY quick.

Re: Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

I have found a few new shows I really like:

Bones - I'm surprised how much I like this show considering I don't normally watch this type of show (even though it's a little too graphic for my taste sometimes )

Threshold - Hope the new time helps the ratings of this show, cause I think it's a good show.

Commander in Chief - Reminds me of what I liked about West Wing until the last season or two.

I tried getting into Night Stalker, but it turned out to be one of those shows that if I missed it...oh well. Although, I do have to say, it was really crummy of the station take it off the air in the middle of a two-part show .

The new shows I'm addicted to this season are Threshold and Invasion. I'm a sucker for aliens.

Re: Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

"Threshold" Crossed Into Cancellation Posted: Thursday November 24th, 2005 10:38pm Source: E! Online Author: Garth Franklin More cancellation news continued this Thanksgiving holiday with the only one of the four new major sci-fi/horror shows not to get a full season order fo far having finally been given the axe.

"Threshold" starred an impressive cast including the likes of Carla Gugino, Charles S. Dutton, Brent Spiner and Brian Van Holt as a team of goverment specialists investigating an alien audio communication signal designed to terraform not only the planet but the people on it. In the pilot a freighter's crew were exposed to the signal and most of the episodes so far have been about containing the signal from getting out via various means.

Sandwiched between CBS's large ratings winners "Ghost Whisperer" and "Numb3rs" on Friday nights, "Threshold" managed to do decent ratings but was an obvious weak link in the chain. Its move to Tuesdays the other week after a short hiatus resulted in significant drops in audience numbers. Reviews have been tepid as well with a small number of loyal or curious critics, but many agreeing it was the most different and original of the four new shows (the other three being "Invasion", "Surface" and "Supernatural" which will all last out the season).

Today E! Online TV columnist Kristin, who's always very reliable, posted in a message "It's official. My sources confirm to me that Threshold is done. Especially sad given the plans they had to bring on Catherine Bell of JAG". So far nine episodes have aired of the show, no word yet as to how many more will screen or have been produced.

Re: Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

I didn't care for any of spook/alien shows this fall with exception of Supernatural but even that has begun to do what I was fearing- the choosen one with special gifts, so typical Buffy, Charmed, Herculas- whatever.

Of the shows that am I totally into "My Name is Earl" and "How I Met Your Mother" top the list. If you watched How I Met Your Mother and didn't like the first few episodes, try it again they are expanding the scope of the show and story and it continues to blossom. Plus lets face it scummy Doogie Houser is friggen hillarious!

Re: Th Hits and Misses of the Fall TV Season

Nope, this season's been all about the returning shows than the new one. Commander in Chief was okay for a few episodes, but then I got tired of it when it simply became too cliche'd.

I want to nuke all these shows that can best be described as "The Show That's Like Lost But Isn't." Surface, I'm looking at you.
