Sea World San Diego to open new coaster in 2012

The long-rumored coaster for Sea World San Diego has been announced.

SEAWORLD SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES NEW ‘MANTA’ COASTER

Blending the exhilarating thrill of G forces with the graceful beauty of marine life, Manta is scheduled to open in 2012

SAN DIEGO (Feb. 9, 2011) -- SeaWorld San Diego is excited to announce that in 2012, the park will unveil its new launch coaster, Manta — a new mega-attraction that will seamlessly transition guests from the awe of watching rays in underwater flight … into the sensation of actually being one. SeaWorld is scheduled to break ground for Manta within a month and the ride is slated to open to the public in 2012.
Swooping over sea and sky, Manta will not only inspire riders with amazing underwater animal habitats, but take them on an exhilarating ride on a coaster shaped like a giant manta ray.

“We are delighted to bring energizing new attractions to our guests year after year,” said SeaWorld park president, John Reilly, “and Manta does just that, combining the thrill and excitement of a coaster, with the educational and entertaining value of an incredible marine-life exhibit.”
Gliding, flying and diving through more than a dozen twists and turns, riders will feel as if they are a ray, taking flight from sky to sea — so close at times that the Manta’s wings skim the waves.

Manta also will feature a unique “launch station” where the passengers will start the ride enclosed in a launch tunnel with larger-than-life images of rays projected on a 270-degree enveloping screen. This stunning introduction to the world of the rays also will visually enhance the physical acceleration as the ride launches down the track. This state-of-the-art projection system will be the first of its kind in the United States.

Riders and non-riders alike will enjoy the graceful beauty of bat rays and fishes. Forbidden Reef, an existing SeaWorld attraction where guests can feed and touch bat rays, will be incorporated and enhanced as part of Manta.

“With Manta, our guests will be able to see and interact with 65 bat rays, 10 guitar fish, and hundreds of fishes,” said SeaWorld San Diego curator of fishes, Thad Dirksen. “The below-water viewing area will include eight acrylic windows and a reef design. The above-water interaction area will allow our guests more opportunities to touch and feed the rays.”

Manta will be located just north of Rocky Point Preserve. SeaWorld is working with German ride design company MACK, which also engineered the marine-life park’s popular ride, Journey To Atlantis. Guests at SeaWorld’s sister park in Orlando have been enjoying a similar version of Manta since it opened in 2009.

SeaWorld San Diego to add Manta coaster in 2012 - latimes.com

SeaWorld San Diego will add a $10-million roller coaster in 2012 that marks the U.S. debut of a highly anticipated prototype ride.

Paired with a 100,000-gallon aquarium and outdoor ray pool, the Manta coaster will be in a relatively unused back corner of the marine park near the Skyride and Flamingo Cove, SeaWorld officials said.

The 30-foot-tall Manta will feature dual launch zones, a 54-foot drop into a subterranean trench and a dramatic wing dip into a shallow lake over a 2,800-foot-long track. Launched from a tunnel filled with manta ray projections, the inversion-less family coaster will reach a top speed of 43 mph and pull 4 Gs during the two-minute trip. SeaWorld is expected to break ground on the new coaster in the next month.

The electromagnetic-launched mega-coaster, which has coaster enthusiasts salivating, will deliver a much-needed dose of thrills to a park habitually light on rides. I can't wait to take my first spin.

SeaWorld San Diego's Manta represents a significantly more compact version of the 125-foot-tall, 3,500-foot-long Blue Fire coaster in Germany, which features heart rate monitors, video screens for each rider and lap bar-only restraints. The prototype Mack coaster be found only at the company-owned Europa-Park, which serves as a proving ground for the manufacturer's newest rides.

I wanted the Flying coaster that Orlando got. However, the lack of inversions make it look like it will be a good Family ride. Can't wait to see what they do with the tank for the re-do.

This is very exciting news for Sea world.. It is much needed for the capacity and growth of the park. I am glad they are moving away from pure water rides ... after dark those rides tend to be empty so this will start to give more things for people to do...

Does anyone know if it will have the same inversion that gives riders the sensation of being a manta and gliding against the water... from the concept art it sort of looks like it but its hard to tell..

And 10 million I am not use to that type of budget

There are no inversions on this ride ... it's not a flying coaster like Manta.

I watched the animated video. Gotta say it doesn't look too exciting. "Family coaster" may be an understatement.

And then Sea World in Texas will get a wild mouse called Manta. Just like Atlantis, the quality will slowly drop each time they build it.

That video is official? Looks like it was fan-made with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.

Looks similar to California Screamin' in that it appears to be a longer, more exciting ride instead of a super intense one.

I know what you mean about Atlantis, but I don't know if Manta is the same situation. Seems more like an intensity drop than a quality drop. But I'm not terribly familiar with Manta at Sea World Orlando, so I could be wrong.
