Disney drops 'Tron' director's next film

If only 'Tron Legacy' had pulled in another $100 million...

Joseph Kosinski’s Horizons, aka Oblivion, is being taken out of Disney.

The studio, for whom Kosinski directed Tron Legacy, is not moving forward with the sci-fi project and is allowing the director to shop it to other studios and financiers. Sources say Warners, Fox, Universal and Paramount are among the companies now considering the project.

Horizons, with a script by William Monahan and Karl Gadjusek, was created by Kosinski who partnered with Radical Pictures before setting it up at Disney. The sci-fi actionner centers on a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler.

Disney had been in the design stages on Horizons for awhile now and even had strong interest from actors; Tom Cruise is such a fan of the project that he even attended the premiere of Tron Legacy to show his support for Kosinski.

The studio was uncomfortable with budgetary plans that put a pic north of $150 million and efforts to lower it failed. Kosinski’s relationship with the studio is so strong, however, that the studio decided to allow him to shop it elsewhere.

Kosinski is making presentations to studios this week.

Kosinski's Tron Legacy, which hits Blu-ray and DVD next week, grossed over $397 million worldwide.

The film sounds interesting enough on it's name alone, but won't it confuse Disney Fans more?

It looks like Joseph Kosinskiís sci-fi project Horizons is finding a home.

Universal is in negotiations to pick up the project, with Tom Cruise attached to star. Kosinski will produce with Barry Levine and Jeffrey Silver.

Horizons, with a script by William Monahan and Karl Gadjusek, was created by Kosinski who partnered with Radical Pictures before setting it up at Disney.

The sci-fi actionner centers on a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler.

Disney, which was in the design stages on Horizons, became uncomfortable in making a PG-13 actionner and let Kosinski shop the project to other parties.

Warner Bros, Fox and Paramount were in the mix with Universal to grab it with Universal fighting for it the hardest.

Wonder if he's still helming the "Black Hole" remake after this?

Um, Tron 3 is still in development and Joseph Kozinski will direct it. The reason they dropped Oblivious was because they thought it was unsuitable for the Disney name and they allowed him to pitch it to other studios. Disney is not stupid enough to drop a director with a unique vision after one film, that WAS a financial success (just not the billion dollar maker they were hoping for).

Re: Disney drops 'Tron' director's next film

If it had pulled in at least another $100 million it would've received an immediate green-light announcement for 3 and a release date. Rather than just the possibility of enthusiastic development with the same production team in place.

The studio appeared to have no objection to J.K.'s next film when they bought it, it was only after 'Tron Legacy' played-out worldwide did the shopping spree get decided. Hope to see him hit it out of the park over on Lankershim. It would certainly add some weight to his scorecard for a possible 'Tron 3' or 'The Black Hole'.
