Disney grooms Gargoyles for big screen

Writing duo David Elliot and Paul Lovett ("G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra") are the latest scribes to tackle a project that explores the world of gargoyles at Disney.

The two, whose credits include Paramount's "Four Brothers," pitched an original take to the Mouse House that the studio is keen on exploring as a live action film. Lauren Shuler Donner will produce.

Project is not tied to "Gargoyles," the popular animated TV series that Disney produced in the 1990s. Instead, it centers on a world in which the stone statues on buildings come to life. Elliot and Lovett would portray them as guardian angels for the cities in which they are located.

Zoe Green had previously been developing an idea with Shuler Donner and Disney exec LouAnne Brickhouse, who is shepherding the project, which is being eyed as a possible film franchise that could spin off a line of videogames, merchandise, TV shows and theme park rides.

Umm, that sounds just like the animated series that they say they are not interested in.

How about instead of this get Greg Weisman back and let him do more Gargoyles with its already built in fan base. What is next Disney, a movie about a Rich Duck and his nephews where he travels the world on adventures? Oh no it is not Ducktales, but rather Duckbills!

Yeah, I got really excited because I thought it was about the already-established Gargoyles.

Yes this is a terrible idea. Throw as much money as you like at it, w/o it being based on the cartoon series, this sounds like a remake of one of those awful SciFi Original movies

Greg's gotta be having a cow about this. And I wouldn't blame him.

Really, they aren't using their already established Gargoyle toon for this movie. It would make for a good movie, with CGI effects!

(Uggggg, let's hope they DON'T use the gargoyles from Hunchback, as an inspiration for this movie! Nor turn it into a musical with juggling gargoyles! )

Man, like others, I too thought this would be based on the animated TV series. So will this be Night At The Museum in Disneyland?
"Up" is a relative concept. It has no intrinsic value.

Even though it's not tied to the cartoon, I'm still interested. There's great potential.

This only makes it sound like they WANTED to use the same story and characters from the original series, but they got into some kind of copywrite hassles. Or, maybe they just wanted to tap into the same fan base without being constricted by the original material (or the original creators).
