Thumbs down Unecessary Slander (Re: Glory Road)

I just saw Glory Road this weekend. Great sports movie. However a joke in the movie hit me the wrong way. the team is on the bus driving to the next game. They are fiddling with the radio. A station comes on and is playing "Down In The Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal. One of the players asks

"Is that Billy Joe Royal?" After getting an affirmative answer he continues "That cracker wouldn't know the poor side of town if it bit him!"

I nearly walked out. I know Billy Joe's story and that is totally far from the truth. In fact "Down In The Boondocks" is telling a part of his story. Thumbs down to Disney for allowing this slander to go on, especially since Billy Joe Royal is still alive.

But a fictional character said this? You're against an offensive character in a piece of fiction? Should we also hold Comedy Central responsible for the nasty things uttered by Eric Cartman, or every author who's ever written a story involving a racist?

Based on a true story actually, but I dont know about the dialog...

However the song is about a boy who loves the girl from the better side of tracks? I have no problem with a 1950's Black Guy laughing at that idea or Billy Joes dellema, given the fact if HE (a Black guy) fell in love with a Girl "From the Hill" he would find himself hanging from a tree.

If you think that's bad, ask some 12 year olds who Pocahontas was, and they will tell you that she was John Smith's girlfriend or wife. Thanks Disney.

It's one thing to make a joke about something that is true and/or someone who has passed away. These were not fictional characters. It was a fictional situation, I'll give you that. However, you should not joke about things that are not true. billy Joe Royal is a public figure. They could have asked him about his personal history. The joke would have been valid if Billy Joe had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I may have taken this too personally and I am sorry.

But of course the next joke was the obligatory slam the military as they were vehemently opposed to hearing "The Ballad of The Green Berets" but of course that's another story for another time.
