Beijing is not interested in building a theme park but would like the Walt Disney Co to set up an animation production center in the capital, a government official said.
The corporate communications director of Hong Kong Disneyland, Alannah Goss, however, said there has been no discussion with mainland authorities on any project so far. Beijing, Taiwan and Hong Kong media reported last week that the Beijing government was ready to spend some 10 billion yuan (HK$9.62 billion) to build a theme park at its southwest district, Yi Zhuang.
But Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform deputy director Lu Yingchuan said Monday the media misunderstood the city's plans. "Actually, if you read our material carefully you will find that what we would like to lure from Disney is the corporate television animation center, not the theme park," Lu said.
