Hasn't Jobs clearly stated that he has no interest in that? I don't have time to go searching for the quote right now but right after the Disney/Pixar deal was announced did he not say he has no plans for Apple to be involved with the situation whatsoever? I remember him saying he wasn't interested in such a deal even if he was in the position to do it.
I wouldn't put to much stock into the idea it just doesn't seem like the right business move, pixar and disney are a natural fit, but disney and apple have a good relationship for distributing some content over itunes and such but apple doesn't need nor want an entertainment company. I think Jobs is smart enough to know this and will stick with Pixar going under Disney but leave it at that.
of course Apple is in a better position than Comcast was, when it tried. I don't see it happening, there is no real benefit for Apple, it wouldn't be in their best interest to purchase Disney. Like Jurgen said, it wouldn't be a smart business move.
For Disney to survive it is imperative that it remains an independent company - It just can't be run answering to another non-creative company's demands. Apple is not the right company to buy Disney - it makes as much sense as GE Owning Universal.
Plus - Disney is worth a lot more than anybody can afford.
Owning Disney would allow Apple to control the flow of content, which could be beneficial in its quest to become the "Digital Hub." However, I wonder if this would put it in a similar position to Pepsi when they owned Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC. This ensured that these restaurants were serving Pepsi, but lost them Burger King who began to view them as a competitor rather than a supplier. Apple might secure Disney content, but other media companies might be hesitant to deal with them.
As far as worth, Apple has lots of cash on hand. They also have (IMO) a highly inflated stock price while Disney has a stock that has hardly moved in the past year.
While I do not believe Apple would purchase Disney, it's worth noting that while Disney is a much larger company, Apple's market cap is about 50% larger than Disney's, making an acquisition at least possible...
A few miles from where Disney's America should have been
Re: Apple could buy Disney?!?!?!?!?!
After the Pixar deal, with Jobs as the new largest shareholder, it was inevitable that someone in the financial press would start this kind of speculation. It doesn't mean that it is going to happen, it's just talk. Apple wants to be your media hub for all media content, not just Disney content. But Jobs can use his board seat and stock to at least ensure that Disney is providing quality content that Apple can leverage thru strategic partnerships.
That said, although I would be saddened if Disney was ever gobbled up by another corporation, Apple would not be the worst case scenario.
"I'm working on changing Hollywood...at the studio that fired me twice."
It should be noted that NEITHER should ever happen. The two cultures, ideas, and business models clash worse than plad pants and hawaiian shirts. Both make great products (products that I love), but to even compare Disney to Apple, or vice versa, is crazy. Plus, what business does Disney have owning a COMPUTER company? Seriously, this isn't the dotcom era anymore people.
I didn't realize Disney was small enough to bought out by anyone... If Disney was bought out, I'd want it to be by apple, but I'd still rather Disney stay independent. But who knows, maybe it could possibly be beneficial to Disney?
