Re: The Official 2006 World Baseball Classic Thread

I realize that we don't seem to have a lot of sports fans here, but I thought there would be more interest among MCers in this very intriguing event.

Two great games in Anaheim Sunday. The U-S ekes out a 4-3 win over Japan after getting the benefit of a very iffy call that you very rarely see made. And Korea edges Mexico 2-1 before almost 44-thousand screaming, and cold fans in a game that ended after 11pm Pacific.

I have to say I love the passion that is shown by the teams, and their fans...it must have been very loud in that ballpark.

Note: Former Dodger Chan Ho Park relieved in the ninth inning for Korea...he's faced the Angels a lot over the years and he's always seemingly pitched well at the Big A...

    Tonight..USA-Korea at 7pm Pacific...Your thoughts...

Great games yesterday. I'm upset I have to train 2 classes tonight so I won't be able to see the game. It should be a good game. The US team has yet to really impress me though. A mercy win over South Africa doesn't prove anything.

Then again, these guys just started spring training and are nowhere near "Baseball Condition".

Okay, can anyone tell me when these games are on? Everytime I change the channels to ESPN I don't see it. I've seen the commercials saying they're on ESPN but they don't say when! How far have the games gone now? Who is still in the running? I was rooting for Italy since Piazza was playing for them...

Re: The Official 2006 World Baseball Classic Thread

Most of the games have been on ESPN 2 (as well as the Spanish language ESPN Deportes). I know there was some confusion at least Sunday, because they were apparently showing the USA-Japan game at 1pm during a time when they had the Pacific Life Tennis event on my on-screen guide.

I later watched the Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic and Korea-Mexico games live on ESPN-2, then at 11pm Tennis came on in the place of a taped WBC game that was scheduled on my on-screen guide.

Okay, here's the remaining TV listing from ESPN.com..It looks a little confusing becase I couldn't get it to "paste" straight across...sorry...

    Monday, March 13

MatchupTime ETNetworkDominican Republic vs. Cuba 2 p.m. ESPN2/Deportes Venezuela vs. Puerto Rico
    8 p.m. ESPN2/Deportes USA vs. Korea 10 p.m. Tape delayed on ESPN2 at 1 a.m and at 12 a.m on Deportes

    Tuesday, March 14

MatchupTime ETNetworkJapan vs. Mexico 7 p.m. Live in Syndication
Tape delayed on ESPN2 at 1:30 a.m. and at 10:30 p.m. on Deportes Venezuela vs. Dominican Republic 7 p.m. ESPN2

    Wednesday, March 15

MatchupTime ETNetworkCuba vs. Puerto Rico 7 p.m. Deportes Korea vs. Japan 10 p.m. Live on Deportes/Syndication
    Tape delayed on ESPN2 at 1 a.m.

    Thursday, March 16

    MatchupTime ETNetworkUSA vs. Mexico 7:30 p.m. ESPN/Deportes

    Saturday, March 18

    MatchupTime ETNetworkSemifinal No. 1 3 p.m. ESPN/Deportes Semifinal No. 2 10 p.m. ESPN/Deportes

    Monday, March 20

    MatchupTime ETNetworkChampionship 9 p.m. ESPN/Deportes

    Link to syndicated games

    Or: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/worldc...ory?id=2294525

Appears the games switch to the main ESPN on Thursday, and don't forget that the semis and finals are in San Diego this weekend.

    I hope this helps.

By the time they televised the USA game last night, I already knew that the United States had lost.

The game was not shown live, basketball news was on instead.

    Not complaining, just commenting.

I'm not sure if ESPN has been giving out confusing information on its website, or more likely that I (as usual ) have been confused.

It doesn't seem to matter to most MCers anyway - this event (or thread) hasn't generated the amount of MC interest that I thought it might. So be it -

Re: The Official 2006 World Baseball Classic Thread

We should be talking about the game in this thread.

It's very confusing, when the announcers explain, what Mexico must do to win.

I don't think a baseball tournament outcome should be based on stats. Baseball games are won by runs. Players crossing home plate. You only need one more run than the other team. Elimination should be on games lost. Not on not scoring enough runs. I don't know if I am explaining that right.

Mexico player hits the ball. Ball hits the foul pole. Announcers say Home Run. Umpires are only giving the Mexico team a double.

    Bad officiating again.

Re: The Official 2006 World Baseball Classic Thread

I agree...very confusing...has to do with the "pool play" concept similar to what is done with soccer's World Cup, I believe...they may want to change the system somewhat before they stage this event again...

Listening to Rick Sutcliffe announce the game (he's always been a favorite of mine), I wish the Cubs would have recruited him to anounce their games. Either he was never interested, never recruited, or the timing was all wrong.

    Game tied.

Does ANYTHING suck as bad as Tape Delayed Baseball? And we were delayed for COLLEGE SOFTBALL!

Re: The Official 2006 World Baseball Classic Thread

A very disappointing finish for the USA team. I know that these guys would usually be in spring training now, and there are other good teams around the world but STILL...a team with that roster...not even to make it to the semi-finals? The way this team played, they shouldn't have even lasted as long as the did.
