With production having just begun, Miramax acquired the North American and U.K. distribution rights to Venus, a drama about two aged actors whose routine is interrupted by the arrival of one's grandniece. Peter O'Toole and Richard Griffiths star as the aggrieved thespians alongside Vanessa Redgrave, Leslie Phillips and Jodie Whittaker. Roger Michell (Notting Hill) is directing the screenplay by Hanif Kureishi (My Beautiful Laundrette) for producer Kevin Loader. Venus is the latest acquisition under new Miramax head Daniel Battsek. Previous pickups include the South African drama Tsotsi and Stephen Frears' The Queen.
