    "Brokeback Mountain" 4/4 DVD release

    March 21, 2006

'Brokeback' DVD ride set for April 4

In a further indication that the traditional six-week solicitation cycle might be going the way of the six-month theatrical-to-video window, Universal Studios Home Entertainment said Monday that "Brokeback Mountain" will be out on DVD in two weeks. The April 4 street date for the film, which had been widely favored to win the best picture Academy Award this month only to lose out to "Crash," is being rushed out to capitalize on Oscar buzz, studio executives said. The short window between the release announcement and the release date is the latest example in what observers say is a trend reflecting the growing clout of mass merchants over video specialists. "You don't need six weeks to sell to Wal-Mart," said one insider. (Thomas K. Arnold)

'Brokeback Mountain' coming to DVD on April 4 LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Those who have yet to see Brokeback Mountain, or those looking to see it again, will soon have a choice — the DVD will hit stores April 4, even with the film still in theatrical release.

The Brokeback Mountain DVD will feature a profile of
Oscar-winning director Ang Lee.By Kevork Djansezian, AP

That's a rare overlap, said a spokeswoman for DVD distributor Universal Studios Home Entertainment. But, she explained, with the film still riding high on its eight Academy Award nominations and three Oscar wins, its theater run has been extended, bumping into the scheduled DVD release.
The DVD's special features include a profile of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee and interviews with Oscar-winning screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Oscar-nominated stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal also discuss the rodeo and wrangling training they had to prepare for their roles as the cowboys in love.
The Brokeback Mountain DVD is expected to sell for $29.98.
Brokeback, which opened in theaters Nov. 30, has grossed $81 million to date.

Yet another reason I don't go to the movies so much anymore. I don't have to wait long to see the movies I want to see.

Us too. I think that is one of the problems with the movie industry that they are all complaining about.

I'm glad about Brokeback. I haven't seen it in the theater yet. Hubby wasn't interested.

^ It's funny. Were listening to the news radio yesterday on the way home from the park and they are saying they are doing a study to see why people aren't going to the movies anymore. Does it really take a study???

    Bad movies
    + High Prices
+ Home theatre technology being less expensive
= Nobody going to the movies.

^yep. i agree with you there! and the theatre owners think they'll get people back to the movies by just jamming cell phone transmissions.

anyway, i'm excited that it's coming out so soon. i simply can't afford to see all the movies that i want at the theatre, so i choose to wait for DVD for the vast majority of films.

    Undeterred, Wal-Mart to Offer 'Brokeback'
    Author: ERIK GRUENWEDEL
    Posted: March 31, 2006

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retail chain, reiterated that it intends to release the controversial Brokeback Mountain in all stores April 4.

Plans to stock the Oscar-winning gay-cowboy love story had come under fire by the American Family Association, a Christian-based pro-family advocacy group. The Tupelo, Miss.-based organization said the movie didn’t belong in Wal-Mart, which it claimed markets itself to middle America.

"It's quite obvious to anyone who shops at Wal-Mart that they're no longer the family-friendly company that they used to project in their image," AFA spokesperson Randy Sharp told Christian-based Web site AgapePress. "We've seen a downward spiral trend by [Wal-Mart] in which they are more and more becoming like the world rather than the family-friendly company we grew up with."

Wal-Mart spokesperson Jolanda Stewart said the chain recognized that a “broad segment of our customer base” wants to buy the latest titles, including Brokeback.

In a separate matter, the AFA March 28 filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that alleged the airing of profanity during a March 26 NASCAR broadcast on Fox Television.

Last month, the FCC imposed a $3.6 million fine on CBS Corp. for an alleged teenager orgy scene during an episode of crime drama “Without a Trace.” The offending scene was originally brought to the attention of the FCC by the AFA.

Re: "Brokeback Mountain" 4/4 DVD release

Does Wal*Mart still edit their DVDs?

I'm going to predict a marketing strategy here. I think this is going to be the 1st DVD released of this film. The 2nd release will have 2 or 3 discs and tout having some missing footage added back into the film. They will imply that the sex scene will be longer and unedited for the DVD release. But when you watch the special edition there will be longer scenes with the wives. Bleh. (Just my own prediction. I think since it didn't win Best Pic and didn't get a post-Oscar push, they'll try to make up for it in the DVD sales.)
